Okay well I looked around a bit and didnt find this topic yet, suprised me but maybe I missed it. What is everyones favorite turnout gear colors here? Personally I myself prefer tan for the higher visablity then black. For some reason my companys torn between black and tan most of the older guys prefer the black and most of the younger guys like myself perfer tan what does everyone else think and why?

LOL!!!!
that stinks. LOL
on my first dept. all the new guys got everybodys old gear, and it was black. but once you got off of probation you got red gear. it took some time to get comfortable with but once you got it into a couple good fires and got it wet it was like any ohter gear. it really depends on what your dept can afford. the price gear is high. and some copany don't care how bulky the gear is just as long as it sells. i like either red or tan because it really shows if you been in some good fires. it shows off your yrs inthe department. so does your helmet. i go my first new set of gear and after one good hot fire it wasn't bright red anymore neither was my helmet. so it really depends on your budget and who you buy it from.
My first gear was black the "old" style. Everything was black. When the department got our first sets of Nomex it was bright yellow. EVERYBODY looked like Big Bird!! Yellow is highly visible but sure shows wear & tear & dirt. We've gone through a couple shades of yellow. Right now our Morning Pride is tan with yellow & orange reflective. There are as many colors as there are manufacturers. What ever color is most affordable will work for me. Black holds heat. Most darker colors do. Yellow reflects heat. I don't think color is as important as how highly rated it is for service.
On the city department I am on we now have the tan. When I first started it was the black. I dont have a preference myself. I think the whole department should have the same color. There is a neighboring city that is full time and they have a mish mash of colors and styles and to me it looks bad on a scene.
I've only used the Tan, and recently Spaceman-Silver! (tan at my volley and silver for arff) Everyone in our area seems to wear either tan or yellowish-tan. Out of the 2 I've worn, the silver keeps the heat off you better in a fire, but the Tan is more comfortable and easily moved around in. I live in Louisiana and its usually 40-75 in the cold season, and 65-100 in the hot season, so I'd personally stay away from the black gear, it sure does look nice but damnit to hell if i wanted to look good while I was fighting a fire I wouldnt be in turnout gear....I'd be in jeans and a button down shirt with my hair gelled!

We use tan with yellow and silver reflective for FF an ENG and tan with orange and silver reflective for officers.
I have never understood the reasoning behind different colour gear for officers they already have different helmets if you want the change just add there title to the back of their jacket instead of getting entirely new gear for them when promoted to officer, in the end it will save money.
In my department well all have the same color gear the officers have different colored helmets.
More important than color is the material for the outer shell, vapor barrier and thermal liner. Outer shell material may limit your color choice depending on what selection is made. Hopefully all the guys in your company are more concerned with performance than color (looks). Also don't skimp on the reflective trim. I understand at some point preferences come into play but they should not be placed above proper performance specs. Tan will show more staining even with frequent washings...black doesn't show the staining but that also makes it harder to see contaminents esp. the nasty ones like blood/body fluids if your dept. does any EMS, rescue or extrication. That's simply my 2 cents worth and we welcome yours...
Ours is navy blue... Its really slick. Its wears well, and looks dont matter as far as dirty or clean, we have to wash them, but it dont matter.. I prefer the worn look anyways, it helps to distingusish who can do the job and who cant.
tan is nicer for us not only because its easier to see but because it gets SOO hot down in south texas so the black would just kill us in the heat even more! so I am all for the the tan!
