I don't know that there is anything you can tell adults, that will change the way they do things. What i think we have learned at my station is you have to get into the schools with a good fire prevention program. We started about ten yrs ago and what we have found at fires are that kids are much more aware of what to do than some adults. These programs if done well to get kids attention will make them go home and start telling their parents the need for fire drills, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and staying close to the ground in smoke conditions. I can remember this was at the beginning of the program we had a fire and i remember the mother saying her six yr old really lead the charge as to calling 911 and meeting ff's to say everyone's out. My message is more to all the fire departments (paid or volunteer) make sure your getting into the schools and teaching the children, in the end they are probably the ones who can push for change in their own homes.
Well, I will take a slightly different tack....Oh sure, the fire prevention and education is important.....BUT...I would try and convey to each and every member of my community that it is an honor and a pleasure that they put their trust and safety and that of their loved ones in our hands....Many times the only time they see us is at a fund raiser asking for money or at a field day somewhere having a crazy time with other Firefighters....I know we have all asked a few times for a simple thatk-you for what we do....BUT when was the last time we thanked our communities for the trust that they give us...?? When is the last time we thanked them for the equipment that we have...? We have a great responsibility laid upon us and I think we should bear that load with pride and honor....and carry ourselves in that light.......Stay safe all...and remember to keep the faith...........MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL Paul
Well Scott....I guess it is just a different point of view....You see, I am not looking for anything for what I do....I mentioned a "simple thank-you" as you so astutely noted..to many here that is all that they might like once in awhile....others feel they are owed something for volunteering......I for one do it because I like it....if I didn't I would have been out the door about 25 years ago....Paul
QUIT BEING SO F*CKING STUPID!! Start paying attention when approaching emergency vehicles at a scene, start using common friggin sense when you're behind the wheel!
I could go on for hours, but this'll do for now. Stay safe people!
And amongst yourselves at the FD you've never said anything like "I wish they could just say thanks once in a while"? That is asking for a simple thank you.
One thing that I've said to people is "When in doubt, call us out" - it's better to be called for something small than for a homeowner to wait until the house is going from end to end!
That's what I was talking about Tony....Attitudes mean a lot and whether we try to suppress them or not the true attitude usually shows through....Way to go Brian....I am sure that your message would be quite clear.....who do you work for...? Even as Volunteers we work for our communities....get hurt and see who pays the bills........Paul
I would tell them to sincerely think about and consider the fact that with less than the standard number of firefighters responding, something critical can not and will not get done. That something critical could mean life or death or serious injury for yourself, your loved one, your neighbor, or one of us. We are not asking to have an army of ready responders sitting at the station waiting to respond to the chance to save your life or your proerty. We are only asking for the recommended standard. Please help us to do our job safely and efficiently in order to give you the best possible service that we can provide. We all have to learn to do more with less and we are willing to cut some corners and trim some fat, but please do not ask us to do this with manpower. If you want us to ride a rig a few years longer than before, OK. If we have to sacrifice other amenities, OK. But, please give us the most valuable tool we have, Firefighters.
Tou really don't have a clue do you...?? Read what people are saying....NO ONE has said that we should ask for a "thank-you" It was stated rather clearly that many would like to hear it once in awhile....not that they would ever bring it up to John Q. Public.....There are 2 types of people in the Fire Service these days...and no...I don't mean paid vs volunteer....there are the "What can I do people? "...and then there is the "What's in it for me ?" people.....I guess it all depends on which type you are......Stay safe and Merry Christmas all.....Keep the Faith.....Paul
