ARSON and Fire Fighter Nation!
I was wondering what your thoughts are, or what should happen to anyone on Fire Fighter Nation who is either accused or convicted of arson?

Dunker, in his online profile at FirefighterNation.com, indicates he has been a volunteer firefighter since he turned 11, and has been working as an emergency medical technician in Fayette County. He also noted that he is in training as a dispatcher at Washington County 911.
"I love to help people when in trouble," he states in the profile.

Especially since he gave the investigators details that only the arsonist could know. Hard to refute that in court after making an admission

As stated on the other post, not the best PR for FFN. Again with an admission of guilt and information specific to the point only the arsonist or investigators would know being given to the investigators, you can pretty much call this an easy case for justice to occur. The website has already taken a hit with the quote by the newspaper, why allow him to stay?

I'm assuming you started this discussion in light of the recent message I posted..I'm hurt, angry, and just plain in shock over the situation. There is no use for anyone in society that poses a threat to his fellow man and their properties. There is no excuse in the world that explains why anyone would go that route. The person I had discussed came from a wonderful family, he had 2 great jobs, and held 2 offices for 2 great fire companies. He had a awsome support group of friends around him daily. At 22yr of age, he damn well knew better. He chose to do what he did, and the rest of us will pay for the havac he brought to us as a fire family. We all will be in the limelight of his actions to the everyday ppl. I personally have no use for him, not now and never again..his membership with FFN needs pulled. There is no need for thought here..He confessed!!!!!! Cathy

The bigger issue here is how to weed this sort of thing out.
Not an easy task.
No department could afford the time and dollars to psych profile all their members and criminal history checks only highlight previous issues.
Don't know the answer....

No, but its coming, might make the verbal a little longer. We can do all the banning we want, different name different profile, and bingo, he’s back and posting…oh…maybe I shouldn’t have said that.

When a profile gets banned from an internet website, it attaches to that persons IP number for their computer. There are sites out there that can get around that but most generally don't have that knowledge.

When I started this topic I did not mention names because I want to know what the members thought about what to do with members convicted or accused of the crime?
Should they be removed ?
As far as me being in this boat; I think when a firefighter commits arson it puts us all in the boad because people frown on the fire service as a whole when this happens.
The department he belongs to is a good fire department and he just tarnished it's name I really feel bad for his fellow fire fighters and ems members because they did not deserve this.
But I respect all of your opinions and thats why I posted this question and what to thank all of you for your post.

There are no hard feelings you typed what you felt with what information you had I respect that.
I beated around the bush on purpose because I did not want to throw names out until I heard more.
I just wanted everyones opinion on the subject.

WOW! I would like to start out by saying Bravo Zulu(Navy term for an excellent, squared away job) turk! You did the right thing in how you presented this to the group. And the group in return for stating that there is a difference between charged and convicted. Now the rest of my story.... This is another one of those problems that we arre going to have to face, grab it by the horns, and creatively deal with. Speculations and rumors can quickly diminish the morale within a department. This one where someone was killed and another accident that seriously injured someone. In both of them, driving under the influence were possible "factors". Has you can see from the comments of the citizens at the bottom of the Clinger news piece, the community is very disgruntled at the actions of these two individuals. The primary reason is because theyy are not only firefighters but they are OFFICERS!
Yes, we are still just people. We are people with alot of responsibilty. Things that we do are under the microscope of our communities. What the answer is for trying to deal with these issues I don't know. It doesn't matter what the proffession is, you well always have people in it that probably should not be. Their actions eventually catch up with them. The departments are left to pick up the pieces and patch the wounds.
The only suggestion that I have right now is, keep doing what we're doing. Make sure that you have good PR standards and events. Develop a good relationship with the local media. Do positive re-enforcing events in your community. It may take only 1 bad thing for people to forget 10 good things, then make sure that you have done 100 good things (which we do daily right?) Try to be proactive rather then reactive. Anywho...I'll let have someone else have this soap box for awhile. KEEP UP THE GOOD FIGHT!! Be safe and learn something new today.

Convicted and Accused are two different things, as others have mentioned. There's no set policy. It happens all the time on MySpace for good and bad reasons. There have been countless cases in even the last year of MySpace pages being referred to when someone is accused of committing a crime, or dies, or does something good (shocker..)
For instance, when a member passes away here, MySpace, etc. typically it gets left up as a memorial.
In the case in question here, really if the member leaves it up as long as its a legitimate profile and the person hasn't been convicted of anything (confession or not, its still not a conviction until a judge says so...), I think we're still feeling out the right thing to do. It is not as if someone is bragging about committing arson in their profile as that would be a whole OTHER story and users have been removed for being idiots within their profile -- it is just their profile about being a firefighter. I wouldn't say the press is good or bad, just as it isn't good or bad for MySpace, etc. People have internet profiles, when stuff happens (good or bad) people (including the media) find them. So we'll just keep an eye on it and see how it goes.
As others have mentioned, it is certainly much different than the impression of the fire department itself is probably feeling ...
