Which Degree is Better?
Which Degree is better a fire science degree or Emergency Managment?
One of the guys on my department said that a EM would be better than a fire science degree, and thats what chiefs in bigger departments are looking for now.

He is very right. It also depends on where you see yourself in the future of this wonderful service. Alot of firefighters(including myself) are going with degrees in public administration and risk managment. Those two are a good combination for this service if you have has one of your goals a "white hat". Hope that was some help. Be safe and learn something new today.

Oh yea it can...but u are going to get that education OJT. Fire science is part of the job. Get a degree in something that can expand your job in the future. Like stated by Sean, it depends on what you wanna do. Do you have a 1, 3, and 5 year plan? That would be my next free advise...sit down and make yourself an IAP for your future. Where do you wanna go and what do you wanna do? The what and how will come after that.

Fire Science Degree from Miramar College, a Bachelors Degree in Biology and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University. SDFD
bachelor’s degree in business administration and personnel management from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. LA County FD
graduating from the University of Santa Clara with a degree in business. SFFD
If your looking to be a big city fire chief, a degree in business/public admin seems almost a requirement. As much as I hate to admit it, in a big city the command staff seems to have very little field experience. Kinda like GMs CEO has probably never built a car. Those chiefs deal with $$$$ signs and not fires.
