Firefighters setting Arson Fires
There have been to many Firefighters setting fires lately.This is Not what Firefighters do and the hand full that are doing it not helping are cause as Firefighters.We need to find away to stop this by either better screening or training.Most of all I think the punishment should be more harsher since they all ready know the action they have taken as a Firefighter.

Paul I agree with you 100% on this, but it's hard to get rid of them all or find out who they are, cops commit crimes and even murders sometimes, it's in every job out there.

This discussion has been around for a while. I wrote a blog on it. We discussed it in depth at another website.
There have been some recent firefighters arson.
Until we get REALLY tough on the firefighter arsonists; until we lose the attitude to keep it quiet and until we convince our society that a firefighter who sets fires is a really bad guy, then it will continue.

Sep. 18--A former Lake City Fire Department volunteer was arrested Wednesday after deputies say he set fire to a truck so he could collect money from an insurance company, Florence County Sheriff's Lt. Brett Camp said.
Eric Rondy Fedkenhauer, 20, of 1020 W. Old No. 4 Highway in Coward is charged with third-degree arson and burning personal property to defraud an insurer, Florence County Detention Center bookings reports show.
Troy Lee Ammons, 20, of 221 Karen Lane in Scranton faces the same charges in connection with the incident, Camp said.
Deputies said the fire was set to a 2004 Chevrolet truck June 15. One of the suspects then called the insurance agency and said the fire was an accident.
An investigation later revealed the suspects purposely set fire to some plastic components of the vehicle, Camp said.
Lake City Fire Chief Tony Singletary said Fedkenhauer had been a volunteer at the department for at least a year, but had stopped working at the agency months before the incident.
Fedkenhauer was released Wednesday from the jail in Effingham after posting a $2,000 surety bond.
Ammons remains in custody at the jail awaiting a bond hearing.

One of the problems that I have seen recently is the idea that we need to accept every applicant into the department. Frankly, I have halted this thought process. Some people are not cut out for the fire service. We are a volunteer department, and yes, our numbers are dwindling, but just putting people in turn out gear does not make us a more effective fire department. I have been very vocal about screening applicants, doing at least an arson check, contacting their references, and thoroughly interviewing them. We have made major changes in the process. And we have said thank you, but no thank you to some. We process them like they are applying for a job. In reality, they are.

A point well taken and your right some are cut out to be firefighter and other are not

Thank you for the imformation and we do need to get tuff on firefighter that start fires.

When a fellow firefighter seys fires , some folks get tunnel vision amd blame the group not just the person. I have seen Junior firefighters being charged with arson from a nearby fire dept. Can we ever do anything to stop this before someone is hurt ?

This is a really sad situation we deal with. Hear in Ohio Vol depts get paid 75.00 per brush fire thru the forestery division.
We had a Fire Chief in the southern part of the state going around and setting brush fires so his dept could get money. At the time our depts would be paid 75.00 for the first three hours then 25.00 per hour after that.
