I am 27 and have dreamed of being a firefighter for many years. Ive finally decided its time to make that dream a reality but Im not really sure where to begin.
I plan go back to school in the spring for a EMT certification and a few fire related certifications as well so I guess thats a start.
I know there are age cutoffs for joining departments. What is the average? Am I already too old?
Most dept are between 31 and 35. Some don't have any. Come here to my dept. we don't have an age limit. In the last to recuit classes we have had two 40+ guys hired.
There is no age cut off at my department, the last recruit class had an upper limit of 43, the one before it 40 with a bottom age of 20. Most recruits were late 20's or early 30's. Don't worry about being 27, you have lots of time if you put your mind to it.
Best thing to do? Apply! Learn what it takes and figure out what you have to do while you go. Talk to other candidates and recruits, drop into firehalls (maybe seek out the younger guys who have just been hired, as hiring practices have changed over the years). This is what I did. I didn't have a lot of extra money, but the application process taught me exactly what I needed to do, where I needed to improve and how to get ready for the next time around. it took a while, but I was finally hired after completing my post secondary (necessary at the time to get an interview where I was finally hired).
