Hey, I am looking fo some info on some cadet/junior programs not in Indiana. I need stuff like age requirement, what they can and can't do, and what kind of training you do. Also, I would like to know how all of you get gear. Do you do fundraisers to earn the money? Pay out of your own pockets? Please respond soon

well where i live at the juniors in our fire dept have got ot at least be 16 and they get to do everythang we do on a fire scene basically.they get to help hook up and unhook hoses and they get to watch and learn how to use the pump and if the fire is in our district and it aint too big then they may get to man the hose on the outside for a lil bit. There gear and pagers get gave to them,we orde rnew gear for the firefighters and the old gear gets passed to them adn they get their pagers after seven consecutive meetings. The only thang we basically dont allow them to do is drive the trucks,do interior attacks and run mutaul aid calls. We get our money for gear and new equipment and everythang thru fundraisers and federal and state grants
I my self started as a junior firefighter in ky. at the age of 15 we could go to all structure fires and wrecks but were not allowed to do anything other than at small grass fires we rode in the trucks but could not drive also we could not respond to back up calls as far as training we were welcome to any training held at our fire house but we could not travel. As far as gear we use our county money and grants to purchase it. But we do have fundraisers to help with the purchase of any equipment that we may need.
In VA when i was a junior member you had to be 16 years old and with in one year you had to get firefighter 1. the dept paid for your training. we got grants from the county we lived in to put the guys threw the classes they wanted and we have a yearly fund raiser that we do to help out with the coast of things. Even know that the junior member had his firefighter1 they were still not a loud to go in on house fires. there job was to be like the go for man. there is a lot of stuff that needs to be done on the out side on a fire then in the in side not everybuddy needs to be in the house. but if we had a car accident the member was a loud to get in on the call. but if it is was a bad one then we had them go and direct traffic or something away from the cars so they couldnt see what was happening. When they first get on the dept the gear they get is old gear from other people after the six months proby term and they have there firefighter1 then the dept buys them new gear and that money came from our fund raisers and grants. also the junior member could not run lights or siren to calls or the fire house. we tend to not let our members to run the own cars to the calls because of the risk of there cars getting hit or them being in the way. but if they would be passing one then we let them stop they were aloud to take there gear home with them. i hope that helped you out a little if you have any more ? just email me thanks

Ryan, i myself started a junior fire department in my station in North Carolina. We have come up with so kinda strict rules just for the saftey of the juniors. age req. is 14-18. 14-16 yr old may come to meetings and help in training ONLY.. 16-17 yr old jrs must have taking haz-mat awareness to ride an engine. They are not allowed to ride first out to any structure fire, any other call they can ride first out. We allow them to fight out side fires such as brush, grass, and trash. Car fires they are allow to ride first out but not allowed to suppress the fire. They are NOT allow to have operating red lights, strobes, or any not manufactor flashing lights in their POV. Now they can run there hazard lights to a call. We do allow them to run mutal aid calls since we run so many. We as firefighters wear black cairns 1010 helmets so we give our juniors brand new YELLOW cairns 1010 helmets. turnout gear is a hand down type thing. with the pagers we give them new pagers if we got them or old ones if we dont. We are able to do this because we only have 4 junior members at a time for insurance purposes. Hope i helped you out just a little bit if you need any more info email me at biscoe_firefighter33@yahoo.com.. Good luck bud
Ryan, here in PA our jr program is based on the States Child Labor Laws as far as age, times they can respond and what they can do.
Let me know if you would like more info on it.
