Most of our fire department stays around but I hate to do this to them this year but I have to go see my step dad because we just got the news he has cancer of the spine and this might be his last Christmas
I live in a small town, you know one of those town were you are born and raised and can't seem to leave or if you do you always come back. well we do not have a problem with coverage since everyones family lives in the same town. knock on wood, since i have been a Firefighter we have never had a call on Christmas. I hope it stays that way.
We have a pretty small dept, and many people travel for the holidays, so first we look for those willing to be "it" on a volunteer basis. I'm not going anywhere for Christmas, and I don't have little kids, so I volunteer for 24 hour coverage starting on Christmas eve...and then I get to be off on New Years Eve if I want to, but I'll probably end up coving that as well. If people want to cover part of the holiday, we let 'em...better some coverage that none at all I guess.
With our department, how we have it set up is that we have a set crew who is "on call" and they are to stay within city limits while they are on call, but usually we have more then enough guys and girls who are around if we do need more people
