HAS ANYONE HEARD ABOUT THE FIRE DOWN BY BRISTOW OKLA AUG, 27 2008 ON THAT OIL RIG THAT CAUGHT FIRE??? MY QUESTION TO EVERYONE IS Y ARENT THERE TRAINING COURSES AVAILABLE THRU THE OIL FIELD COMPANYS TO ASSIST US ON TAKING SOMETHING LIKE THIS ON WHEN THERE IS A BLOW OUT AND THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND INCIDENT COMMAND. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT MOST OF US ARE SELF TAUGHT LIKE ON TANK BATTRIES...AND WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT IS SOME HANDS ON.
Mike-
If you have oil fields in your response area, I would first bring this question up to your Chief. Then your Chief would have to approach the oil company and maybe they could arrange something. I know there are companies that specialize in oil rig fires, they might be able to help also. Just a thought, I'm not sure if structural firefighting gear is enough for fighting an oil rig fire. You might need proximity gear.
The "local" oilfield companies here do offer and cross train with the fire departments that would be first due at any incident. Actually we just had a natural gas rig fire and it was discussed in the news story about the training that they do together.
BRIAN THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENT, WE DO HAVE SPECIAL GROUPS LOCAL HERE THAT FIGHT THESE KIND OF FIRES BUT IT NEVER FAILS WE ARE ALWAYS THE FIRST ONES TO BE CALLED OUT, AND YOUR RIGHT THE PROXIMITY GEAR WOULD BE THE ONLY GEAR TO USE. BUT I GUESS IM LOOKING FOR SOME CROSS TRAINING LIKE JAMES HAS IN HIS AREA. WE HAVE THESE PIPE LINE CLASSES HERE BUT NONTHING OF ANY SORT OF SOME HANDS ON TRAINING...THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY.
JAMES I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS CROSS TRAINING YOU DO AND THE AVENUE YOUR DEPARTMENT TOOK TO GET THIS TYPE OF TRAINING GOING...MY HATS OFF TO YA BROTHER...
YA HALLIBURTON IS ONE OF THE COMPANYS WE HAVE CLOSE, BUT AS OF NOW WE GO THRU ALL THE RIGHT CHANNELS LIKE HAVING THE COMPANY MAN ON SIGHT TO SHUT THE WELL HEAD DOWN FOR TANK BATTERIES BEFORE WE EVEN MAKE ENTRANCE INTO THE WELL SIGHT. BUT AS FARE AS SOME OF THE WELLS WE HAVE WAITING OUT THERE FOR THE WELL TO BURN OUT MIGHT TAKE DAYS. I WILL TRY TO MAKE CONTACT AGAIN WITH HALLIBURTON AND SEE IF THEY HAVE ANY CROSS TRAINING FOR THE LOCAL FIRE DEPTS. LAST TIME I CHECKED THERE WAS NONTHING...BUT THANKS ED
