St. Petersburg (FL) Fire with Burn Victims

September 2, 2009. On 9/2, at 2335 hrs, units from St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue responded to a report of a structure fire at Peppertree Lake Condos, 720 - 116th Av. N. Apt. 2402.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the apartment full of smoke, and that they had two burn patients. The first patient is a 25 year old male with 21% burns to upper extremities, chest and hands. The second patient, a 7 month old male with 20% affecting his face, head, and chest.

According to firefighters on scene, the father was preparing something on the stove with a pot of hot oil that burst into flames. In his panic to put the fire out he grabbed the pan, raced towards the door, spilling hot oil on himself. During this process he tripped over the 7 month old child spilling hot oil on him as well.

The adult male was transported to Bayfront Medical Center in stable condition and the 7 month old child was declared a "trauma alert" and transported to Tampa General Hospital.

The fire alarms in the apartment were audible at the time of arrival. Damage to the apartment was confined to the stove and the surrounding cabinetry.
