Life Saving Firefighter Skill - How to use Hose Couplings as Directional Indicators

Getting disoriented and lost inside a structure fire is a danger every Firefighter faces when entering an unfamiliar building that's filled with smoke. Prevention is the first step to avoiding a LODD or injury, but preparation and being able to quickly react to a life and death situation is also essential.......

This video serves both as a review as well as an introduction on how to use couplings on a hose line as directional indicators. Also included in the video is a description of an easy to make prop that can be used to teach and reinforce this skill.

Understand that the "Mnemonics" discussed in the video are just two of many techniques taught for this skill. It's important for each individual Firefighter to use a method that THEY like and one that's easy to remember.

"Lugs on the shank lead to the tank" is what we use and teach in Fort Worth.
