Hello. To answer your question, it really all depends.. As far as Active Duty Army firefighting I would say probably civilian firefighting is a little better. Now as a DoD Civilian Firefighter, they don't get nearly as many fires as civilian (non-DoD) departments do, but w/good mutual aid agreements you can get some. Now the DoD is great for certifications. You can do all your certs (self-study) for free. They are really big into certs. I have been both (Civilian and Military) and each presents there own challenges. You will porbably see more interesting calls outside a military installation, DoD is just really good when it comes to fire prevention. Now the benefits and pay are probably better DoD than Civilian. Like I said it really all depends on what you like and what you want to do...Either way they are both Firefighters and I respect anyone (volunteer or career) military or civilian that wants to do this outstanding job. Hope this helps a little, just remember each department has it's own set of challenges and every dept. is only as good as what you put into it.
For some of us I think it's a way of life, it's one of the few constants in our lifes. The old saying 150 years of tradition unimpeaded by progress. I know I would be lost with out it or the friends that come with it.
