Today the United States Fire Administration released the preliminary results of 2008 Firefighters Fatalites. Although medical problems are still the leading cause ( mostly heart attacks/strokes) 29 firefighters died in crashes! 15 of these firefighters died in vehicle crashes, where in every case SPEED and THE LACK OF A SEAT BELT play a role in thier deaths!!! I cannot understand why with all that is publicized, why firefighters don't or refuse to wear seat belts?????? I am all for the brotherhood, and i would stand and fight for any firefighter, but when you cannot help yourself and take the 3 seconds to put a seatbelt on, not for me but for YOUR DEPARTMENT,YOUR "BROTHER FIREFIGHTERS" , YOUR FRIENDS, YOUR FAMILY, HOW ABOUT BEING CONCERNED FOR THE COMMUNITY YOU SERVE? THE TAXPAYERS who bought that half million dollar rig your playing russian roulet in? I'll even tell you the BS excuses are no good, if you dont fit with your gear leave the gear off!!
Don't you do drills to put your gear on fast? Do it at the scene. Arrive at the scene and back alive!! You are no good to anyone critically injuried or dead. ARE YOU?
Why do i care? Because, if you have never had to tell a firefighters family thier loved one is deceased, you are lucky, if you have never carried a deceased firefighters casket you too are lucky, you see, I have done both, and I cannot stand to watch firefighers needlessly killed on duty. I have seen first hand what happens to the department and the community, if you think they don't suffer YOU ARE WRONG! If you think your promoting the brotherhood by turning a blind eye, your a coward, worried about losing a "friend or buddy" cus you told him to put on his/ her seatbelt?
What will you say at thier funeral? What will you say to thier family?

Every firefighter should travel to EMMITSBURG,MD. to attend the annual fallen firefighters memorial, it is a moving experience. Watch as the widows and children cry over the lose of thier loved one, as they deal with thier pain and suffering, Watch as a chief hands them a folded american flag, a rose and a badge from the foundation, to remember thier loved one. It is a moving experience, if you don't leave there with a different feeling or thought, on the issue, you are cut from a different cloth than most people i know.

If i've offended anyone maybe you needed it.

STAY SAFE AND WEAR YOUR SEATBELT THE LIFE YOU SAVE MAY BE YOUR OWN!!!

Well said Jeff, there are a few guys on my dept. that are concerned with exactly those two things; how many lights they can cram onto their PV and trying to impress any woman they can talk to by dropping some sort of line about being a firefighter. Any ya know what... those are the same guys that can never seem to make it to trainings or business meetings. Just goes to show ya that there are firefighters and then there are FIREFIGHTERS!!! Anyway... yeah, anybody that doesnt wear their seatbelt is just being careless and stupid. I encourage all drivers/engineers on their dept. to do what I and so many others do; If I'm driving, the rig DOES NOT move until everyone is wearing a belt

First, let me say GREAT JOB.
However, my cynical side is telling me that the people who really need to learn from this post may never even click on the link.....instead, they are waiting for the next hot picture of a girl or trying to figure out how to add more lights to their POV. Sorry, I'm in a sour mood.

Bruce -

I was the last guy to get on the engine Sunday morning before it pulled out of the station to a working fire.

I only had on my bunkers when I got on the truck, sat down and got belted. When I got off the engine at the scene, not only did I have the remainder of my gear on, but my SCBA as well, including the waist belt. All the while I was wearing my seat belt.

No magic. No phone booth to change in. It just takes practice and being practical. And I did it without compromising the effectiveness of my seat belt.

Amazingly, one of my best friends has me by about 100 pounds and he can do this "magic trick" too.

You're right. There are absolutely no excuses.

Stay safe. Train often.

check out the latest addition to our website ( Lafayette Township Fire Department ). Our command staff pushes both TRAINING and SAFETY at every monthly meeting ( we TRAIN on the other three to four Mondays each month ). Seat belts do and will save lives. We see it ourselves when we cut a patient out of a vehicle that has crashed...duhhhhhhhh! There is NO excuse for ever riding without buckling up. The Webpage is of a Training Power Point for Tools and Utility locations on our Rescue Truck. Go to www.ltvfd.org/rescue1powerpoint.html and check it out. Nearly every page pushes seat belt use.
