This past weekend our area had some strange dispatching going on that kinda like mad a few of us on the engine wonder, there was a call for a choking at a fastfood restaurant in our district but they only called the medic for it, now granted they said they were breathing and it is our policy that it is dispatcher discreation on who they send, but what was crazy about it was later they sent us to a call and all it said was for a bleed, we get there and the person basicly only stubbed thier toe and peeled about a 1/4 in of the skin away from the outside edge of the big toe, we all thought that was crazy for us to be called for that, BUT hey thats why we do this job they call and we show up it doesn't matter what it is when we get there, it was just one of those crazy weekends, and quite honestly I am glad I was apart of it.

Hi John,
I am a dispatcher for our Sheriff's Office and for Bull Mountain Vol. Fire Department. I ws reading some of the comments that were posted below yours. There is a comment from Anne Potter. She id right, we can't see what is going on and don't know what it is like on your end.
At the SO when I started the deputies strongly suggested I sign a peice of paper so that I could go on ride-alongs with them. That way we can know what it is like from there point of view. I haven't gotten the chance to go yet, but hopefully I will soon.
With me dispatching for our fire dept. I've gone out a few times with my guys and know exactly what they are going through. They try to get me to fight fire all of the time. I tell them no thanks I'm happy right where I am at. Taking care of there butts down at the hall.
Are there any other dispatchers around that either dispatch for the fire dept. or S.O.? Or both. I would like to meet others to.

Here in lies the problem. You either respond to everything, increasing your costs and possibly missing a true emergency while on a bum call, or you 'filter' calls and rely on callers to adequately describe the situation. Your call #1 is chocking but breathing and #2 is for uncontrolled bleeding.

That is true it was frustrating but at least it wasn't a code, dispatchers bust their Butts when its busy.

You know you got to give the dispatchers some credit they can not see thru the phone to see what is happening and sometimes the person on the other side makes it worse than what is.. Be thankful for those that are easy and beware of the one's that sound easy and you get there and it is a code....
