Blogger’s Note: The following is my submission to the Fire Critic’s First Due Fire Blog Carnival focusing on the topic: “I’m a firefighter because…”

Unbeknownst to me, my mother kept a keepsake box for several of the eight kids in my family. My father gave me mine shortly after she died. I still have it and have continued that family tradition with our kids.

Amongst many other treasures in that box were two cards and a hand-made book that may have forecasted where I would be today.

The first card was to my parents congratulating them when I was born. The card was from the Evans Center Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. Today, I celebrate my twenty-ninth year with that very same fire department.

Indeed, Thanks Tiger. Oh yeah it was true that it was not easy. I miss her really. Reading the blog brings back the great memories and her support for my love of serving my community. Before she passed away she was bedridden for 6 years because of stroke, dialysis and she was blind because of diabetes. Only her eyes to the outside world is through the local FM Radio and the radio was kept on 24/7 even though she goes on and off sleep. But when I get home from work. She still fills me in on what happening on the news especially the fire service stuff like a prominent volunteer was interviewed, a recent fire alarm etc. Now the radio was silent. And I miss that....

Michael -

I'm very sorry to hear of your mother's passing. It is never easy, regardless of the timing or the circumstances.

Take care.

Thanks for sharing Tiger. Few weeks ago, my mother passed away and I always remember that my mom was very supportive for me of being a volunteer.
