Ok so in the louisville area in kentucky we do a thing called the WHAS crusade for children, in which the fire departments have road blocks and do door-to-door to collect money to benefit children whose families cant afford the medical care needed, research to help childhood diseases and equipment to help special needs children live a fairly normal life. The fire departments collect the money in their district for a week bringing out the sirens and lights to each house. Then on sunday they go to either louisville or another smaller location to give the money on tv to the crusade. Everyone gets on tv, we get rocognized and thanked and it just really gives you a good feeling inside.

Well the firefighters drove the trucks while all of us juniors actually went knocking on the door to get the money... We knew the basic rules, dont go inside, dont stay too long, watch out for the dog. Our basic rule of thumb was if the dog is wagging his tail when he walks up to the truck its ok to get out.

One junior watched this particular German Shephard, he was wagging his tail so he got out and went to the door. Everything was fine, the owner came and gave a few bucks and as the junior turned to leave the dog bit the back of his leg, taking out a pretty good chunk... Well the owner acted like nothing happened as blood was running down the back of this kids leg, the firefighter notified base, provided first aid and went back to the station where the juniors mother picked him up to take him to the hospital. They basically bandaged him up, gave him some rabies shots and sent him home, he was back in time to be on tv with the rest of us. The firefighters filled out all the paper work, called the dog catcher, wrote down the address so we wont collect their next year and smile for the tv camera when it was all said and done.

So im wondering... what would you have done if a junior firefighter you are in charge of gets a could be serious injury?

btw tuesday - sunday Bagdad raised over 16,000 dollars for the crusade for children! Pretty good i guess for a little bitty town in the middle of BFE

"potentially a crime"?

In Texas, the dog would be impounded, and the Health Department would be notified, and the owner could be charged with a 3rd degree felony. Also, the law states that any dog weighing over 40 pounds must be registered.

With today's society, you can never be sure the type person which may be at a particular residence. As a result, we must be careful when responding on calls, much less a fundraiser. They (the resident) might consider us to be trespassing.

I would have requested an Ambulance and the Police Department to be dispatched to the address of the incident. We would have never left the scene as it is an assault on a department member and is potentially a crime.

We do something the same for the MDA, called fill the boot and we set-up at a shopping plaza. Door to door fundraising like this creates unique hazards, as you have lived through and with the economy the way it is I suspect eventually you will get some disgruntled residents.
