I’ve said it from the beginning- this blogging project is a work in progress for me, but I'm enjoying it and it's apparently pretty contagious. As far as my writing skills, however, I’m quickly learning about how to catch your interest in sound bites rather than in paragraph form, which is a big transition from technical writing. Of course, I know that to put “Buy Cialis” as a title to a firehouse blog will get people to look, even though it has nothing to do with firefighting and then only to find out it’s a cheap ad, blog spam as it were. Maybe to increase readership I should title this "Buy Cialis II" and then move on with the sequels ad infinitem. Maybe posting a picture of a lot of fire will help. Who knows?

Over at The Kitchen Table, Bill Delaney brought out another method of getting the word out: by Twitter. I logged in and saw Webchief had beaten me there- he’s definitely got his finger on the electronic pulse of the fire service.

How do you use these forums and blogs? Are they a pastime for you or are they a useful tool. Or are they just more wasted space? If Santa gave you a nice saw for Christmas this year, would you build a china cabinet with it or would you use it to chock the door to your workshop? What you do with the tools you are given says a lot about your vision; where do you want to be in that continuum?

It is a tool and I think that we are all looking for, or to become, craftsmen. Sometimes you build something for yourself and you don't care if it looks good as long as it serves your purpose. Other times you are looking for a sale and when Inquiries come they are appreciated. But looking around at what has been built and what may never be finished gives us all ideas about how we can make it better. That’s enough allegory for now, just know people appreciate good work, literary or otherwise, and to be able to produce it is a gift.

Thanks for taking time to review my last stuff.

I'm glad to see I haven't completely lulled you all to sleep. I am, however, concerned by Art's post. Maybe there IS too much of a good thing. I hadn't heard about the Twitter or the Facebook worms. I have some pretty robust anti-virus protection, but it only goes so far these days. It's all a crapshoot; we can only strive to get the word out and hope we hit the target. And I've also learned, blogging isn't just about educating the masses- sometimes it's just nice to say your piece, like it or not. But in a way, that's pretty educational in its own way too. Thanks for reading.

Been visiting you (lurking, actually) on Fire Zen.

Blogging is, for me, a combination of therapy and catharsis. If I didn't siphon off all those random thoughts swirling around in my head periodically, there's no telling what you'd be hearing about me on the six o'clock news. (I often state that if you could see what my brain looks like on those nights that I can't sleep; it would be reminiscent of Mordor in Lord of the Rings---all roiling black clouds and one big fiery red eye)
Keep posting....I'll keep reading.

Mick;
I'm still weighing the Twitter thing.
Security is a big issue with me.
With many of us, not unlike yourself, we find ourselves going to or possibly commenting on many sites.
I am told by the Mad Scientist here that he is working on a platform to bring many sites together. Not sure how, but I will leave that to him.
I just heard this morning that Facebook got hit with a worm that steals personal information. Potentially, that is 120 million users!
Yeah; I'd like to hit a bigger market share, but not if that means letting my guard down.
And don't forget; there are still departments out there WITHOUT computers, more that have computers but no websites and some who have laptops under the sole control of chiefs.
So there are many out there in cyberspace who haven't even scratched the surface and here we are trying to get to a larger audience with less effort.
We have definitely come a long way.
TCSS.
