I hate to sound like the guy who wants to be a smart ass, but the most versatile and valuable tool a firefighter can take with them to any scene is his or her own mind. Without it (and I have seen folks who seem to forget it on a regular basis) no tool or technique will be effective. Remember your training and your experiences. Apply them to the situation that you are handling right here and right now.

Also remember that every experience is an opportunity to learn something new. If you don't have the experience, maybe someone else on your crew does. Pay attention and ask questions. It is never wrong to ask a question, but it is always wrong to act irresponsibly.

The most important action that can be taken on any scene is to think, then go to work. Fire, Rescue, EMS, Special Operations, Haz-Mat, they all require that you think, then go to work.
