the fastest way i found to build cardio is to take a 50' section of 3" hose and couple it together. Then set up 2 cones 100' apart and run back and forth. I found this to be very helpful especially for building endurance which you will need for the test too. Good Luck!!

it is a very demanding test. the stair master is a killer. go to a gym that has the stair master and get yourself a weight vest to work out with. try to get up to 10 minutes on the machine without holding on to the rails. don't go crazy right away start at a reasonable amount of time and work yourself up. cardio conditoning is a must as is upper body strength. 3 minutes and 20 seconds doesnt sound like a lot but when you are on the machine with 75 lbs that 3 minutes and 20 seconds seems like an eternity. i have taken it and didnt make it off the stairmaster before my legs gave out. lots of others had the same problem. of the ones that had passed it, even the ones in top physical shape afterwards they were exausted. lots of luck. hope my info helped.
