So I had to blog about my new daughter Sophia. She was born yesterday at 1143 am, has all her toes, fingers and other vital parts, and she is beautiful! Her trip into this crazy world was the makings of a great story, so I thought I would share with all of you, my faithful readers. If you know me, well lets just say that you know promptness isn't my strong suit. For those of you who don't just pretend I am punctual...nah, that just wouldnt be me. OK enough with the filler...
Yesterday morning started off early as Tam was to be at the hospital at 6am. I think I rooled out of the station at 520 and it's a good 20 min drive home, then there is the 20 minute drive to the hospital, didnt leave me a lot of time now did it. Well, somehow we made it, of course Tam left me a text that she was leaving for the hospital about the time I slid into the driveway.

Now, we get there and of course the doc shows up about four hours later...make that four and a half hours later, but hey, we had to be there at 6 sharp. And Tam was going to be there, by god. So we made it, now comesther Keystone Cops part of the story...sit back and enjoy this one.

The morning started off with the nurse going off shift not being able to hit a vein. Now mind you Im just an EMT and I could hit her veins...she didnt make a second attempt and we ended up with a great nurse, who a few hours later would pretty much deliver Sophia single handedly. No she didnt really but it does make for a better story.
Meridith our second nurse walked in and I felt like an old man. She looked about 18, but was 25 according to Tammy. She was terrific, and kept Tammy in a pretty good mood up until her water broke and the contractions became a little more serious about happening. (Her words, not mine) So after an hour of pretty steady ones, she asked for some pain meds and that was when all hell broke loose. It was 1128 and whatever they gave her worked because she relaxed a little for about 5 minutes. Then it was on, poor Meridith walks in to get things ready and Tammy says "Shes coming". Well Meridith said let me check you and since she was at 5cm only 10 minutes earlier, didnt seem in too big a hurry. But that was before she said "Wow, shes really low". The look on her face was classic "Oh Sh*t" we all see in the field, but only we know what it is...civilians, just think we are being serious. Thank god, they would never feel so safe if they knew wh had aw sh*t moments too...right.
So back to the baby...Meridith calmly reaches over and presses the emergency call button, and gets the droning charge nurse saying "do you need something?" "Umm, a delivery team, NOW" was all she said and kept pressure on Sophia's head till the Cav could arrive. Well most of em anyway.
Tammy is a trooper, lying on her side, wel l sorta, and trying not to push, breathing that lovely pant thing she is supposed to do. and poof out pops Sophias head, then an arm and a shoulder, and the doc comes strolling in. Now the look on her face was classic! Instant take charge mode and a little suction later Sophia is on the bed.
Now I know this seems like a brief synopsis, but it has taken WAY longer to write then it took to happen.

So Im trying to figure out how to give Meridith some of The Docs show up money and jsut write her in for making an appearance. How many thousand dollars did we pay her to drop in for 3 minutes??? Surely there is a rebate here somewhere...

As the father of three beautiful girls, I know your pride right now. Congratulations and enjoy every moment with her.

On our first child, they hooked my wife up to a monitor to determine the speed and severity of contractions. I was kinda bored, so I was sitting there watching it and every time I could see a big contraction building up, I'd say, "Wow, this one looks like its going to be a big one". Eventually my wife got understandably pissed with the commentary so I rpetty much sat in silence for a while.

Good luck!
