Ok so our township, after lots and lots of pleading and begging finally got the grant we needed and purchased a brand new 3,019 gallon tanker (excuse me, tender as we have to say around here now) So at our last meeting, our training consisted of everybody riding in and driving the new tender so that we could all get a little more familiar with it. I don't know if God blessed me, or if I'm just made for it, but I have never driven anything as big as this truck or anything with air brakes and I did really well. My chief told me that he was really amazed and impressed with my driving. (I did silent jumps for joy!!) Anyway, long story short, my chief told all the guys that I gave him the best ride and drove the best. Now some of the guys are upset with me because here comes this 22 year old girl who has never done anything like this, has only been on the department for 6 months and "shows 'em up" as was mentioned. Now all the guys are good guys, and I understand why they're upset but should I be sorry for this??? Noone has been mean or hateful, I think they just feel, I don't know showed up.

Ashleigh,
Don't be sorry for doing a good job! Having just recently become a driver/engineer with my department, I can say that being a good driver is very important. And with a 3,000 gallon tanker weighing in at over 36,000 lbs. you can't be too careful. I was reading that tankers responding to calls account for only 3% of the responses, but they also account for over 21% of the injuries and fatalities in those responses, so being a good driver can account for a lot when it comes to driving the apparatus. Get yourself enrolled in an E.V.O.C. course to get a better handle on what driving is all about.
Stay safe and be careful out there!

Thank you for all the encouragement guys I thought about it and I should be proud of it. I went into that knowing that it was a huge truck and that I needed to show it as well as my chief and our township respect by treating it as such. I'm a very methodical and analytical person and I believe that's what helped me drive well. I knew I had to take the everyday precautions I use in my own car and amplify that by a lot!! But anyway thank you all!!

No way, you shouldn't be sorry! Not at all. You did a great job and they have should look up to you for it. Not down at you. I will say this, most of the women drivers I have had over the years seem to have a soft touch and drive great... Most of us guys want to show off and go fast!

I agree with the others - good job! You have raised the bar for the other guys and... they don't like that. But I'm sure they will get over it.

I would also like to repeat Patrick's caution - always drive that rig like it's a really big truck. At 3000 gallons it IS a monster and you need to watch out. Let us know how things go with the guys.

Good Job! Besides driving well , you became a "Motivational Tool" for your Chief(In a good way). Not only was he being supportive of your accomplishments - he believe it or not - used that to motivated the others.
Ask your Chief about the E.V.O.C. - Emergency Vehicle Operations Course - its a good way to help training drivers and can be done in a parking lot. Use your excitement to help improve and expand training opertunities.

BRAVO!
God Bless
Stay Safe

Sorry my arse! Don't ever be sorry for being good at doing something....

You have nothing to be sorry about.. As Big Jim said we do get over confident with ourselves. Your Chief must have thought that you done very well driving and that's good since you doing have very much experience. Don't let it give you a big head and use caution when driving next time. Congrat's and good job .. the guys will come around it'll take alittle time.. trust me I went thur the same thing the first drivers training I went to after joining my department.
