Steven Close. He worked out of Station 3? I think. The station north of Main St. on the east end of town but not the newest station.

I was there for a short visit at Thanksgiving last year. My Dad still leaves in Hesperia. I didn't see anything that I couldn't live without. I moved permenantly to AV in 84, graduated from AVHS in 87 but my family owned a cabin up off of Central Rd near Round Up Rd ever since I was a baby. Leaving 10 years ago was the best thing. My kids were getting to be school age and I sure didn't want them exposed to all the LA influence that was moving into the area. My husband was a Principal at AVMS for a few years and it sure seemed like the wrong crowd was moving into the area by the masses. I miss the call volume and especially miss the veg fires. I live in dry wheatland farmland now and we do have killer veg fires, we don't have all the cool resources like aircraft like CDF used to bring in. Well, hey, it was great talking with you! Please keep in touch and tell me about your dept back in NY. I need to get to work around here. (My bad!) lol

My buddy just sent me a link to the paper's website about the meeting that turned sour. I haven't been following it all along. I know take-overs aren't easy but are very do-able. The transition from Hesperia Fire to County wasn't easy but now things are running smoothly and my friend loves being stationed up in Arrowhead on the fireboat. He gave up his paramedic cert. because of the stress and yet he's still employed. Obviously, Hesperia had a different agenda with their takeover than VVFD had. Funny thing is, when I left the high desert SB County Agency really didn't exist. SBCo Fire/CDF covered a lot of the area but the municipal departments were running strong. I wonder what happened in 10 years, ten strong growth years at that?

Hmmm, seems like having two medics available is more a luxury than a necessity. My local "big town" requires all ff's to be EMT-Ps but they run their own buses. It sure seems like they could have eased into this new requirement better. I agree with you, these guys should have thought through things a little better. I sure wouldn't want to be jobless in today economy. Plus, there are tons of up-and-comers who'd love the chance to fill their shoes. Either way, it's an ugly deal.

From the newspaper article I read, it sounded like several firemen left after the decision. Doesn't Valley or AMR cover the ambulance portion for VV? If so, I don't see the need for EMT-P/FF's. ???

Wow you're a long ways from the high desert! I too worked for AVFD but as a Reserve Prevention Officer not a PCF. I started as a PCF in Spring Valley Lake with San Bernardino County Fire Dept.
I keep in contact with a Hesperia fireman friend and he just told me that Victorville FD has now gone with SBCo Fire Agency like Hesperia did a few years ago. It looks like AVFD is the last remaining municipal department left in the desert!
