Hey Robbo, Send me the lat and long of where you work and live. And how cool that the concept of wildland urban interface is new for you. You are going to love the stuff that I can send you to get you caught up on so many things. Are you familiar with the standard fire orders or the 18 watch outs? Urban interface fires are hitting more of us as the populations extend out of the city, out of the suburbs and into the mountains. As a result, we get some pretty nasty fires that seem to be gaining in numbers and intensity. Here's some examples to help paint the picture.




The last photo shows are number one goal for residents and that is to provide at least 100-feet of defensible space. I hope you find this helpful. Stay low and safe! Mike

You are welcome to come visit where I live and work anytime. Wildland firefighting originated here in Santa Barbara and eventually spread (no pun intended) across the country. We had (and still have) indians who 100 years ago would set fire to the back country to manage the wilderness. It's too bad that we can't do what the native americans knew how to do so many years ago. Now, we have the additional problem of what we now call the wildland urban interface. I know that there are only two places in the world that have sundowner winds or foehn winds. Desert area inland with high temperatures blowing toward the coast, creating dangerous winds that push fire a long ways. Do you have special hose lays and tactics that you can share? Do you use the incident command system as a management tool for mitigating your incidents? We've got some cool stuff to share! Stay safe.
