my name is Shirley, but everyone calls me Lillie, and will be changing it once I get the money too, though with this economy now, I'm kind of iffy on that. Currently, I am looking for a job and wish to pursue firefighting as a career.

Hello there- I saw you were interested in being a firefighter? I TRULY believe anyone that wants to do it, TRULY wants to do it, can. I am smaller than you, but size is irrelevant; it's about determination and finding that you can do more than you ever thought possible if you work hard enough for it. A word of advice- you don't want to be considered a FEMALE firefighter- you want to be considered a FIREFIGHTER.

I have been a firefighter fo r20 years and I can tell you that it is a male dominated occupation. But thats not to say you cannot dop it because you can. We have a lady on our dept that is smaller than you and I have no problems with her inside a fire or out. I am a big man and no you could not get me out by yourself but the thing is as long as you will stay and help get others to me and then help thats what matters. The other thing is you nust prove yourself every time you enter the house, it's not fair but thats the way it is for a woman. Blunt But True..... Start your career now and have fun while doing it. If you would like to ask any other q's drop me a line.
Hey I,m new to this site and just wanted to meet some new people. Drop a line some time if u want.. And it's not that bad of a career, maybe work out somemore other than that u'll do fine.
Hello, Elizabeth! I would encourage you to pursue your dream of being a female firefighter. I think anyone with the determination and the desire to do this job can do it, and do it well. You're 5'7"-- that will help, believe me, I'm 5'7 1/2" (the 1/2" is important! grin) I've been a volunteer FF (just got to the 240 level this Oct.) for almost 4 years now. I wouldn't trade any of it for anything in the world, great job. EMS is also a really, really cool part of this job as well. Take care, stay safe, and good luck!
Brittany
There will be a few things that a physicaly challenging but for the most part you can do most everything you put your mind to. Good luck and let me know if there is something i can help with.
You can do anything you put your mind to. Just because you are small doesn't mean you can't do the job, I had several Female Firefighter who worked with me when I was a District Chief and they were awsome. They did the job and did it well. If it is something you want then I am sure you will do well at it as well.
