Hillary Clinton Has Been Calling Me!

I don't know if it's because I am a firefighter. Maybe it's because I live in NJ and everyone is watching Super Tuesday for the 2008 Presidential Elections.......

Are you getting involved in the Presidential Election politics this year? Do you know who your candidates are and what they stand for? Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat you have the responsibility, duty and…

Firefighter Gifts: The Rookies Put Out The Fire

Posted on January 11, 2008 at 2:18am 1 Comment

Becoming a firefighter means serving your time as a rookie.

Serving as the Captain of a fire department means training rookies to become firefighters. How do you know when they have gone from rookie to firefighter? Are they a fire fighter when they pass FFI, or is it when they come off "proby" or probationary status. When the time set by your department is up, say a year, are they no longer a rookie then? Is it when they put on their navy blue firefighter t-shirts or car plaque on…

Firefighter Rookies First Fire Alarm For 2008

Posted on January 1, 2008 at 3:37am 0 Comments

Just returned home from our first fire call of 2008. 14 years of firefighter experience, training and dedication...... Yeah you guessed it - a carbon monoxide alarm. Not just a carbon monoxide alarm, a bad battery in a carbon monoxide detector. Can't get more exciting than that. Sure, the rookies were thrilled, packs on - CO detectors in hand - helmets in place. I even had to drive because all my engine pump operators were still celebrating the effects of New Years…

Firefighter Gifts: The Bond of Brotherhood

Posted on December 30, 2007 at 11:31pm 0 Comments

Becoming a firefighter is not just about the Fire Academy Firefighter I program. It's more than just the countless hours of training, demanding physical labor and sleepless nights. It is about the flames, destruction and unknown. And it is about going through it with the guys on your line. The firefighters who hang their accountability tag next to yours, no questions asked except for "Ready?".

This bond is like a secret. Not because we won't tell you, but because we…

I just saw your post on the Pre-Plan post, some how missed it before. Regarding the Captain riding in the rear of the apparatus and the safe zone. The Captain riding in the rear simply allows that person "time" to study the pre-plans and formulate a tentative action plan without being distracted by assisitng the driver. The Captain does not stay on the apparatus as Operations Officer. The safe zone is five feet inside a building to allow the Captain to do an Interior Size-up of conditions before advancing. Flashover pending? Bar joist being attacked by fire? Just wanted to clarify your comments. Thanks.. .

We lost the firehouse and one truck. Yes I was there. It was about a 1/2 mile from my house. It was a bad day that day.
