At our department we're planning a remodel in the coming year and I'm on the committee to decide what things to improve or change. Here's a brief rundown of the building:
40x80 1 1/2 story metal building
4 - 15 foot bays with manual roll up doors
kitchen and meeting area at one end of the building
day room and chiefs office above the kitchen
small storage area at the rear of the building
small male and female restroom
We're in SE Texas by the way and a all volunteer rural department.
What I'd like to know is this:
Is there something you don't have in your station that you wish you did? and/or Is there something you have but rarely use?
One thing that our dept could really use is showers in the rest rooms. We are in ohio and if there is an emergency our department will probably be used as a safe house since we have a full propane generator. Another thing I would look into is automatic garage doors.
Electric garage doors, a have to have. I would also have a back up generator. It sounds like Christophers dept. is on track. The other thing that I would do is put in emergency lights for when the power goes out. they can be done with out much cost. Use some 12v white led light like they use one the back of trailers.

Hey at least you get to plan your remodeling. haha we had a fire in our station about 3-4 months ago. we had offices up stairs that were heavily damaged, and thats really about it. Didnt take us too long to get it all fixed up though.
well we remodeled a few years back and now were adding a security and fire alarm system... we have a generator, office, kitchen, bathrooms, overhead storage over the office, a small toolrooom, and a large meeting room. all our doors are electric and we have 5 bays 3 in front and two in the side but only one has a truck the other is for a generator. the whole inside is done with white tin with red tin "molding". We have a lot of nice stuff because we do a lot of fundraisers and I mean a lot from fish frys to larger 3-4 day events. We are one of 7 independent volunteer fire departments in Ohio. We do a lot of work and have two newer engines that are amazing a 2006 Darley Engine with CAFS and a 2008 Dodge 5500Turbo Diesel Weis Custom.
A suggestion I have would be, keep some room for tool storage and an area for maintenance. Personallly spend many long nigts with my personal tool chest at the hall doing tune ups and maintenance. Another gotta have is exahust filter or exhaust evac system. Even with 15+ ft. ceilings the smoke level comes down fast. A Carbon Monoxide headache sucks.
Our department's two stations have been remodeled or had additions built on over the years.
The main station has had two additions and remodeled for use for activity hall, personnel bathrooms, bunkroom and storage. The problem now is the number of apparatus and a county battalion chief that took up residence in the station with his vehicle forcing us to park a pumper outside unused. The apparatus room could hold 2 pumpers, brush unit and ambulnce but now has 1 pumper, ladder truck, ambulnce, brush unit and batt chief SUV along with the laundry area and exercise equipment. Our chief has asked the membership about another addition to have space for everything but thats been a distance thought for a few years. The new thought is to remodel the office. I have my own thoughts about what should be done and the President has hers too. The sub station has had the kitchen/lounge, bathroon/laundry, bunkrooms, offices and storage areas redone a few times. That station is under our control but staffed by career personnel and only volunteer left is the assit chief assigned there.
