It just so happens our Captain is having sex with a Probationary FF, she is now a rookie, past the Practical and Final exams. I believe the Officers should be held to a higher standard. Thoughts?
I guess I need to move up to your neck of the woods. I could use a pool.
I did build a storage building for my Asst. Chief who is also my Ex. But I did offer to do it, and I didn't have to have sexual relations (thankfully) although I did have my shirt off. ;0
Hey sometimes you cant fight love.....I met my wife through volunteering (I was fire and she was EMS) and when the FD got an ambulance she began runing calls with the FD. I was a Capt, and then asst. chief while we were dating.
The biggest thing is fairness. As long as he is not showing favortism to her then I saw its not a big deal. When favortism and special treatment begin to happen then you have to nip it in the bud. I think if you asked my wife I was so concerned about there being favortism shown I was probably harder on her than anyone else.
Firehouses breed relationships, think about it....you live together (at least on duty nites), you share experiences that no one else does, and fireman make great husbands we cook we clean we are responsible (well some of us). You cant blame a women for wanting to be with one of us, and you cant blame a man for the same thing. It nature....monitor closely and if it becomes an issue then say something.
Everything I read here reinforces the arguments against fraternization. And it's not just the Fire Service dealing with it either. It's part of the long standing argument against women in the military, in the police force, even in the business office. You WILL get unprofessional behaviour - men and women (or men and men, women and women for that matter) WILL engage in sexual relationships, and it WILL interfere with the normal course of business. Some have been lucky so far that their experiences haven't caused any hardship. But you will find that this is the exception to the rule. By far, most humans are not this enlightened yet to allow constant professional interaction to trump base animal instincts. I wish that the reality was different. Don't get me wrong - I like women in the workforce, I believe they are just as capable of performing the needed tasks as men. But that doesn't negate my observations.
The real question is how do we deal with it, and how do we keep it professional?
