As much as this page has settled in to focus on physical fitness, I wanted to come back to the nutrition side a little more.  We spend a lot of time taking care of our physical fitness requirements, working out, lifting weights etc, but how many of us take that proactive a position when it comes to our nutrition?  Being in shape is great, but it is more than just maintaining strength and cardiovascular health.

One of the best things we can do for ourselves is get in shape, and part of that requires excellent nutrition.  In addition to creating healthy bodies, good nutrition builds good brains, strong neurons and better focus.  Taking care of our brain is the forgotten side of fitness, but like any organ system it can fall into decay if not cared for.  The first nutrient I will recommend for this is Acetyl L Carnitine.  This form of Carnitine has the ability to cross the blood–brain barrier and enter the brain, where it acts as a powerful antioxidant, which helps in prevention of the brain cells' deterioration.  Its supplementation has been shown to be neuroprotective in instances of cerebral ischemia in rats and may be useful in treating peripheral nerve injury as well as spinal cord injury.  Because of these properties, it is considered one of the vital brain nutrients for adults.

Another vital nutrient involved in maintaining brain function is the Omega III fatty acids.  Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University recently studied this nutrient in connection with cognitive function and found that there was in fact a strong level of correspondence between the nutrient and better cognitive function. The Omega III and VI fatty acids as well as Acetyl L carnitine can form the backbone of a plan to maximize the nutrition for our brains and may also have the benefit of helping us maintain a more ideal body weight.  Carnitine is also associated with the metabolism of fats and carbs.

But don’t trust me, look em up!

Aloha, and be safe!

I am a former airborne paratrooper and the work out I use is mil -spec and it works just as fine but I also use the techniques of tacfit and it double my breathing capacity using an SCBA.

There is a "4-day wave" periodized workout available at tacfitfirefighter.com and the full 90 day firefighter workout will be available in March.

I am working on starting a Firefighters Health 5K run/walk with the American Heart Assn and other organizations. Should be in June. Hopefully in the Meadowlands. Still working on all the details. Let me know if you are interested.

I have been hearing more and more about interval training of late, and think it is also a good way to train. Fitnessonline makes a good observation that altitude training can be risky if not done correctly. I am fortunate in that I work at 9-14 thousand feet and spend two nights a week at altitude, so I am able to fully acclimate THEN go climb and train, so My risk is really minimal. So if you can't get to the mountains, definitely consider interval training as a good possibility!
