I recently was elected to a fire Lt's position, I take office in Jan. 2009. Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated. I have 4 years on the dept and recently got my 240. Thanks in adavance, ladies!
Congratulations on your Lt's position! I have been in the fire service for 12 yrs and have more training and fires under my belt then more then half of my department. I have only been able to achieve the rank of Fire Police, which in my County means I get to direct traffic and do crowd control on a fire scene. I was recently told that I may be appointed to Captain soon and when that day comes I will be the happiest person in the world and the sun may just have to take a day off because my smile will outshine it. LOL
You have been able to accomplish something in four years that most of us try our entire careers to achieve. Again congratulations and I wish you the best of luck! The only advice I can give, is make sure your friends know that you are now their leader not just their friend. There will be some that will think that because you were their friend first that you may let them slide on things that other officers wouldn't. It is hard for some to separate their personal friendships from their on the job relationships. So make sure you set ground rules from the beginning.
Let me know how things are going for you in your position, I would love to hear from you. Best wishes from West Virginia!!!
Is this promotion going to have you out in a company or in an office? We have all ranks both in the stations as well as in admin.. The one thing I try to do as I am newly promoted Captain is be confident with all my decisions. I train a lot with my crew and try to treat everyone fair and equal. Take it day by day and you'll do great. Good Luck, Be safe.
