Last class I was in the instructer said "Booster line is for washing the rig."

We try to pump in the 150 gpm range. We have a saying cook at 350, pump at 150. That's just a general rule, each situation is different. Yall are very right about the synthetics, and plastics for the "hazmat" fires in todays homes, mobile homes are even worse. Hate those tinder boxes!!!!!!

Ya know we just had a talk about this monday at our meeting, why is it that we automatically go for 1-1/2 inch lines when we go for interior attacks. They seem to find it's easier to use a 2 inch line for this, even though it's heavier, and not as flexable, it seems to be easier to control, but it's all about your GPM's. I agree with yall on that

I agree. We are establishing a flow of 165 to 200 gpm depending on the pressures being generated at the pump and the type of nozzle being used.
This is probably a contentious issue, but I hope people are not using booster lines for interior attack on a building fire. Grass and dumpsters they work great, other than that, not so much.

When I teach, I usually discuss to my audience the target GPM's for flowing an interior attack line today. Back in the 1970's and 80's, the target GPM's for progressive departments was upwards of 125 gpm. That was the inch/half with a combo nozzle as compared to the brothers who were pulling the one inch booster lines.

Now the target range is upwards to 175gpm to effectively introduce the proper flow from one line for BTU's in todays interior "hazmat chemical" fire.

The booster line will still work, it just takes longer for the fire to die down and eventually produce the btu's appropriate to the reduced gpm's.

You are right about the floor. Like I said cobwebs get thick sometimes. My thoughts are if we can not get water to the base of a fire quickly and control it, the math takes a back seat. Like you mentioned the fuel package of a home has changed greatly in the past 2 to 3 decades the formulas are most likely obsolete.

David your formula is for figuring out GPM for a single (fully involved) floor only. There has been alot of talk though that this formula is off with the newer, plastics and synthetics, which are now burner much hotter than the fuels used in the old fire flow formula.
