A photo of FDNY Rescue Company 1 donning some early (read "antique") Draeger masks is here.

Those guys rode to work in this apparatus - a 1914 Cadillac!

In 1978 when I joined we had two....not on each engine but total in the fire house. Plus 2 spare bottles. Until we got a new engine in 82 did we have 2 more. had to add brackets so we could have 4 on the engine. So that made 6. Finally got smart and added 4 in a compartment, in 86
Look how far we have come. We owe it to all of those who came before us and those who are yet to come to be the very best at what we do and to keep getting better and stop dying in vain.
Yeah, back when men were men, the old ways

were so much better than the new ways

and safer too.
