I've seen here in the past little bit where our new members are joining like 906 groups just so they can get to the top of the point list and he's not the only one, plus people post like a zillion pictures too. I say if we keep the point system then it should be based on just how you participate in the forum section. Just my opinion, I guess I needed to vent .................. sorry.
Seems like this debate has been here before. No there is no point to it, unless Dave opens a point redemption store…?....LOL. I will agree with you TJ, but only they know if it’s done to bolster points. Quality and content should be above quantity, I know lets ask NASCAR….I think the points are OK but impossible to police, well not impossible but very time consuming. I’ve been on FFN a relatively short time, but have come to know the people with good discussions; they are the true “guru’s”
Keep the points....it's not like you win a trip to Aruba or something....if that's all it takes to float someones boat then I hope they have fun with it.....besides someone like that has probably never set foot onto a real Fireground let alone gone inside and the closest they have been to a Fire is watching a truck go by...I think they are called "wannabees"...To my real Brothers and Sisters...stay safe and remember to always keep the faith.....Paul
Damnedest thing;
YOU just got on my good side.
As Mel, Joe, Wally, Tiger, Mick and many of the other regular bloggers can tell you, we like to know that we are reaching our intended audience, if there is indeed an audience. Are people actually reading or are they more concerned about what THEY are writing and in some cases, plagiarizing? It's funny; but you don't get "points" for commenting on a blog; only if you reply to a "discussion". But that's not important. What is important is: who's reading your stuff. They might read it, but won't comment on it. As case in point is: I also blog for www.firerescue1.com. The project manager for this endeavor tells us that it has increased traffic to the website by thousands! Yet; we only get a few replies to our blogs. That's disheartening until the editor tells you that you're number one with most hits. Being number one is NOT important to me. Getting information out, helping to move a discussion and articulating sometime controversial issues to the front IS important to me and knowing that there are people interested enough in the fire service to read is why I do it. Otherwise; there would be no "point".
I will cash my points in for a groovy FFN shirt, but I am hanging on to them until they become redeemable.

I only joined this site somewhere in November and I already know who is putting out the discussions worth replying to and blogs Worth commenting on. You don't get that info from the amount of points that person has, you get it by actually reading and participating in the site. In less than two months I have gotten almost 2,000 points and that was not by joining all the groups out there or uploading 100's of pictures. I did it by starting discussions, replying to discussions. I even started a group that had gained 16 members. The points to me really are not what keeps me coming back to the site daily , it's the interaction of all the different minds and knowledge of firefighting from all over the world that has me coming back.
I don't believe the point system was set up to create a competition but more for the fact that you can see how active a person is on the site. We all know or will find out by checking out the activity of a member if their so called points are earned or just group joining and picture adding points. Just because I have more points than you or vise versa does not mean I'm a better firefighter.

We come by it the old fashion way; one reply, one discussion at a time. In fact, at one time, I think I had more songs on my playlist than I had photos. I think I got more photos now, but that's only because we have had two major downtown fires this year.
It's like when I was over at Firehouse.com. I had over 5000 posts. I posted because there were some very interesting discussions, but then, they would turn personal, so eventually, discussions began to suck.
Then, I went to another website where we had respectful dialogue, still do, I am on the board there and remain active. I also moderate forums, so we keep a close eye on shenannigans.
Here, I can discuss and I can blog.
I'm happy.
Here's my latest blog elsewhere: http://thekitchentable.firerescue1.com/2008/12/2008-and-winner-is.html

I just love the site. I don't pay attention to points. I love learning from other people and reading the topics or latest discussions. The groups I have joined (very little ) is because I found them interesting and it was quicker for me to get to those by adding them to read the latest. I don't have alot of pictures but I do have alot of songs because I love music.I do not participate in alot of discussions only the ones that mean something to me. I work full time and do not have alot of time on the site so I will never be at the top of points but again I don't care. The only thing I care about is learning more and more about the fire service on the site.

Who cares about points... it is just a number. Actually I didn't notice the points system until you posted this thread TJ. It is not why I am here to begin with, whether it says zero or a million, not going to make a difference to me.
I think when the points system came out there was a lot more "competition" to create the largest volume of BS to get the top amount of points. I agree with a former reply when they said having the most points doesn't make you any more of a firefighter. (for that point where were a few NON firefighters who were top 20 for quite some time) When the points became a competition I made it simple and ended my tenure on the list. (basically 3 or 4 days after they came out)
If it makes someones day to be number 1 someday (not including who is number 1 now since he has posted a ton of great content) than they obviously need a hobby.
