So at my school i noticed the other day that there is a sign saying "e NO VEHICLES OVER 5 TONS ARE ALLOWED TO BE IDLEING "e... we have to let them idle to work the pumps and our ladder on our quint. Anyone else facing issues something like this
That's o.k. The school that is in our district yelled at us for hose testing and having the trucks on thier new asphalt. Considering that it is the ONLY place in our district that has a hydrant, they are outta luck. Heck, chief has been arguing with the school to do a pre-plan for years, and they barely let us come do fire saftey week!!
Tell me about it. Like I said, chief and our board has been fighting with the school board for a few years now. They just seem to have no interest in having us come. The major problem is that the neighboring district has a paid department and they say that they have all the help they need. They seem to forget that the school is in OUR district, yes we will be calling for mutual aide from the PAID guys, but the attitude just plain sucks. I guess the school board feels that because we are volunteers, we are incapable of handling a emergency.
Look into your local laws and see what applies to Fire Apparatus. Most jurisdictions allow Emergency Vehicles to do whatever they need to do (but know the laws regardless) it may help you later on.
And just a question......what type of apparatus are you guys pumping at idle?
Fire apparatus on official duty are exempt from this. The sign pertains to delivery vehicles, etc. They don't want them sitting there spewing out diesel fumes! Stay safe!
As has been said in here already, the sign is not meant for responding vehicles of any kind. We fit into the "exempt" catagory. As long as you are on a call, there is no problem, however, if you are visiting the school or doing dempnstrations then the amount of time you "idle" should be looked at.
I'm pretty certain that in the event of an emergency, just like every other time we run with the lights and sirens on, we ignore the signs, as long as it is safe to do so. In otherwords, school on fire is a little more important than the noise and fumes from an idling engine. Kind of a common sense deal, am I right?
We have also been fighting with our school for fire prevention. They say it is "disruptive to the learning enviroment" I'm sorry but the kids are there to learn and we come to teach them about fire safety so whats the problem? We fight them every year, we always win! but still it's a fight.
i would say you are immune to any action if you are on a call our policy is the trucks idle at all times when on call unless the engine is not needed eg we are just extra labor
if you were to be doing some teaching in a classroom or something similar sure park the engine out of the way and shut it down
