Can anyone please assist me on how a volunteer firefighter is able to deduct expenses from taxes.  I was out of the fire field for a couple of years and finaly moved to a town that was interested in a 10 year firefighter/officer.  I tracked the calls i went on and tracked my mileage and other mileage that i had gone to firefighter training.  At tax time i was told that i was not able to use my mileage as a deduction any longer.  The tax people told me that i had to have more than 10% of my annual salary go toward my deduction or i was not able to claim it.  i really have a hard time accepting this answer, can anyone give me some feed back.

I don't know about your state level, but federally you should still be able to use any milage used for volunteering as a tax deduction. I do know that it needs to be tracked in a detailed manner such as a ledger book. I would recommend checking with another tax preparer for confermation.

My tax person has never told me this. I just give her the mileage driven for volunteer activities(Not FF in this case) and she does the rest. I'd check or change tax professionals. This is one area where you get what you pay for. The guy who was charging use $125 sucked.
in SC our departments keep track of it. It is a point system and we are required to meet a minimum number and we qualify for a major deduction. I believe we can do mileage but I haven't kept track of it.
Where I am, we get a $$$ tax credit, so it eliminates figuring milage and whatever else. Basically it's a, "here, thanks for helping out, but if you owe us anything, we will just take it back out of this". It's a pretty good deal.
The state of Maryland we have LOSAP which helps with tax deductions by means of points. Records are kept for times spent at the station, responses, sleep in, training and meetings in and out of the station. This will mean filling out different record books at the station for standbys, training, and meetings. Response reports have members names or ID numbers to use for LOSAP. All stations have a LOSAP chairperson who keeps all records and turns in the info to the county chairperson which is sent to the state.
The station chairperson has to make out state LOSAP tax form which is turned in with the state income tax
paperwork during tax time. You can also turn in with your tax records all travel mileage for the fire service.
Training records for any completed classes by county or state angencies are added to station records and added to the LOSAP.
