Truck Company Operations
I have been in the fire service for about ten years 5 years as an explorer and 5 as a call firefighter with different departments. Right now I have been on personal leave from the fire department for about 2 1/2-3 years and am starting to work my way back into the fire department with a local town.
During my ten years I always seemed to gravitate towards engine work. Mainly because I was usually on a first due engine or for the truck only for motor vehicle accidents. Coming back into the fire department though I want to become a well rounded firefighter being capable in all aspects of the fire department not just the engine work. Since there is a possibility I may end up on a truck company going to a fire or other incident where the company is required. Now although I did study the truck company books and manuals I was wondering if anyone had any tips for truck company operations for someone technically new to the truck company?

Do you not have to qualify for a position or are positions just thrust on you ? In any case the best advice is the same for any new position you are unsure of grab one of the old hands and stick to him like glue . Practice your new evolutions until they become second nature using the experience of your partner and asking him to clarify your uncertanties. Don't wait for someone to ask and expect you to carry out a procedure at a scene that you are not 100 percent comfortable with.

With the department Im looking to get on its call so our position and tasks all depend on when we show up and what truck we make.

SOP or SOG's exist in all departments. Read them, memorize them, live by them. If they don't exist for truck company ops, then write them. Make it your mission in life to visit other departments and ask around who knows the most, has the most experience and eventually you will hear the same name come up. Go to this person and follow Roy's counsel.
It's also a given that this us nit rocket science. There are typical truck company responsibilities dependent upon where you sit. Do your own homework. You will learn a lot more. During your research you will come up with things you have no clue about. That's the kind of FFN post that not only you can learn from, but others which has always been my personal preference when I either post or answer a forum. Looking forward to your next posting.
