Roof Safety '' R - Lad"
Hi
Lately we are experiening a lot of injuries to Fire fighters falling off roofs.
Made me think of a tool we used many years ago called a R lad. Basicly it
was a fixture attached to a roof ladder, enabling Fire fighter to leg lock
wilst standing or working on a roof.
Has any of you seen it ?
What is yur thoughts on it?

They should bring back the roof ladder. It was a not too short ladder with a steel hook that you could hook on the pitch of the roof. This type of ladder is not in use anymore here in South Africa.

We use roof ladders here in wyoming, in fact we had two firemen leave one on the roof of a fully envolved structure last sunday and all that was left was the hooks over the peak. Great tool and something that needs to be used. As far as the R lad, never heard of it, but sounds to me like it could be useful.

What's wrong with a good old leg lock on the ladder? As far as roof ladders go, be careful when and where you use them. With lightweight trusses, there is no ridge pole to support the hooks of the ladder. If there is a ridge vent, assume this is the case, not always. Just remember, get up, vent and get off. There is no reason to stay on a roof for any period of time if there is fire underneath it. Or, just wait a minute and it will vent itself.

We use a roof ladder but i agree with J brooks get up vent get off but if you must stay up a good old pic axe placed in the roof for foot support works fine

We still use roof ladders in Joburg,but problem is how do you do a leglock with a roof ladder?. Most of our building have tile or Zink roofs and alot are thatch grass. If its a thatch you will be working on the roof for hours. Weve been thinking of using a grabling hook with rope and making loops in it to kick in.

There is nothing that says you cannot use a ladder belt and rope to attach to the roof ladder. We all have tons of equipment on our trucks already. Use a little imagination and you probably have what you need already.

I have been in my department for 17 years and I have never seen or heard of the "r lad". It sounds interesting. It looks interesting. We use roof ladders and we cut our vent hole and then pretty much we are down off the roof when we are done.
