Here's another story of a homeowner who didn't pay the subscription fee for fire protection, believing that, if he had a fire, the fire department would come anyway.
He was wrong.
This follows the same line of thinking of districts who shut down their departments, believing that, if they needed fire protection, they could rely on mutual aid.
What is wrong with that thinking?

but would the insurance company pay if they realize that fire protection for that area was not secured by the home owner? thats a tricky issue right there!

It was a family member that assaulted the Chief of Department. I guess maybe the Chief was an easier target than hitting daddy.

Read the link I supplied earlier about the County Presentation from 2 1/2 years ago. The problem was identifed and remedies presented. It was the Count Commisioners that CHOSE not to do anything about it, as it was, and remains, a County issue.
Sadly the media jumps on this because 'House Burns Down As Firefighters Watch" makes a much better headline than "County Commissioners Still Thinking About Whether Or Not To Do Something About The Lack Of Fire Protection Within the County Borders Rather Than Relying On Local Municipalities For Un-Funded Fire Protection Services While House Burns Down."

Yeah, the story is changing as it gains traction.
First he just didn't bother to pay the fee, now he 'forgot.
First he started the fire, now it was started by 'grandchildren'.
He does seem somewhat mollifed by the fact that he DID have fire insurance coverage. Wonder how he managed to 'remember' to pay that but forgot his fire subscription? I'll bet he 'borrows' his neighbors newspapers too, no since subscribing when he can just mosey on over and read his neighbors paper. Kinda the same thing I guess.

Good ole boy sitting in his lawn chair in front of his burned out house because he didn't pay the fee but thought it wouldn't matter, but now the firefighters are bad picture for the photographers - Priceless
For days like this, there is insurance. For everything else, there's MasterCard.

He lived in an unincorporated area of the county with no native fire protection. I'm sure the Insurance company is well aware of that and his insurance premium reflected that lack of protection. Buying into the subscription service may be little more (in the eye of the insurance company) than buying an extended warranty. It might reduce his premium but may not be required by the insurance company. Residential sprinklers will reduce fire insurance premiums but as yet are not required for coverage.

"I ain't no fan of big gu'ment and don't wants ta be told whats I gots to pay for stuff I ain't a wantin. I's amurican and shud be able to live free wit out no gu'ment innerference. 'Ceptin' o' course when I's wrong an it done costs me ma house an such. Why then o' course I expects the gu'ment to be a payin for me an ma belongin's even if'n I warn't a smart a nuff to a paid up whats I was told I was a owin. this is amurica, I'ma 'pose to be pratected agin myself an my ole stupid ways."

Him or the insurance company will be contacted by an ambulance chaser and will take this to court and sue the fire dept for not aiding. Of course it will cost the FD more money too fight it than it will to build him a new house and so he gets a new house, clothes, furniture, etc, all for not paying his $75.
