You are doing an occupancy inspection with your engine company and this happens...

You have zero time to be prepared for this so now what?

Do you know and understand START?

Do you know and understand ICS?

Good luck!

A foreign version of the TV show Jackass?
just in case some don't know already:

UPDATE: According to a news report a 15 year old girl died due to serious head and internal injuries, at least 11 people were wounded in this accident. All victims were members of the same family and were brought to the hospital. More.. The pickup driver was speeding and lost control because of "a fault in the highway".

Well.. ya got me anyways CBz. Not being an officer, I would have either waited for instruction from the CO,or I would have grabbed the bag and went to triage the travellers. Would have to actually be there to say for sure. But likely there would be a changing of the pants after that. Damn.
i wanted to keep it clean....yeah, i would probably have crapped my self.
I think the call for assitances would go like this. Engine XXX to communications! emergency! We just witness a single vehicle rollover with multiple victims ejected and trapped in and around the vehicle. Request a mass casualty response. Engine XXX crew will be triaging until help arrives. We are not involved. (Meaning we didn't cause or become part of the accident)
The response will 4 BLS 2 ALS ambulances, heavy rescue, mass casualty bus and support unit, EMS officer, Batt Chief, PIO, 2 addition engines. Helicopters have to be called according to category of trauma after radio consol with a trauma center doctor. Addition units and officials will be added as the situation is sorted out.
never underestimate my sneakiness... :D
ashfire-You cannot request helicopter(s) to the scene of an accident? If that is the case that is unfortunate, in our area any FF/FD, EMS, or PD unit can activate the helicopter on the basis of what the call is and how bad the pt is. We can call the helo direct to their dispatch, or go through our 911 system ( the easiest way-let them do the work ). Seems your helicopter would really be delayed by waiting for the dr. to triage the call on a scene call. I was a Communications Specialist for medical helo service and if we waited for the doc's to answer pages to come to the phone response/lift off times would definately been longer-we toned out the crew and the blades were turning and the ship was off the ground within 5 minutes. Anyhow, just wondering if you have to wait on the docs.
S.T.A.R.T.=Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment ( Keep It Simple Stupid )

I.C.S=Incident Command System ( Take command and set up your structure and mitigate the problem )
Hey Mike, I thought it was Simple Triage and Rapid Transport?
WOW!!!!
This all came about after the crash of the Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter a couple of years ago. It was felt that the call they were called to was a unnescessarily call which resulted in the helicopter getting lost in fog over the hospital and crashing tring to returning to their base to tranfer the patients on board. The crash killed three emergency providers and one patient. One patient lived.
Two MSP helicopters have crashed in fog condictions before this last one since 1970 killing the crew of two. Four crashes have resulted in the loss of eight troopers, one ground provider and one patient.
There is now a trauma tier that has to be met before a helicopter can be sent to a call.
Same here, just start triaging, looks like there will be a few black tags there so thats pretty much a done deal,,,a few walking around -- so thats a good sign,,about 4 or 5 red tags -- take care of them first and transported..whole job done in less than a hour. Hardest part appears to be getting the resources there. Trauma is simple and basic - just the organization and maintaining your composure could really be the problem. As I always preach - Know your job - Understand your job - DO YOUR JOB.
