Mandatory or Not?
Is it now mandatory for the back of a fire truck have the reflective tape on the back?? I read this somewhere and i told a few guys about it they want to argue or say no this cant be true but i see it alot now on newer trucks along with a amber light in the back!! I tried finding the article again and looking it up cannot seem to find anything can anyone help me out?

You don't HAVE to do ANYTHING the NFPA creates a standard on, unless your FD has formally adopted the NFPA standards (highly unlikely), so your answer is no it's not mandantory. The main kicker is that although not a law, NFPA standards WILL hold up in court. So if you buy a rig and its the standards aren't met, if something happens involving the rig in an accident, insurance companies might not cover or better yet the department could face a lawsuit. NFPA 1901 is the standard for Apparatus, 1971 is for structural ensembles. I thought the chevrons were the 2009 standard and the diesel/urea tanks/particluate filters are coming in 2010 though...

As Ron said, this is effective Jan 2010, and new vehicles meet this standard. However, not sure if there is grandfathering older apparatus. We did have striping placed on our older vehicles to meet this, so I believe there may be so much that is required for all vehicles. Not 100% sure on that though.

As of 2010 all new apparatus constructed will be in compliance with this standard. No one will be expected to retrofit older apparatus.

Chevrons are mandated on all new (2009 and up) apparatus, in accordance with NFPA 1901 (motorized Fire Apparatus). You are NOT required to retrofit older apparatus, although some F.D.s are doing it (mine included).

I like the chevrons. I don't like the amber lights. From behind, we look like a garbage truck or something other than a fire truck. We have the raised roof on the cab and it hides the light bar on the front. Both of our rear rotators are amber. I don't like it, but I do have to live with it.

the diesel emissions standards are an EPA requirement....the stripes are a NFPA recommendation

we have a 2009 pumper that has no chevrons....so it's not a "mandate"

it is part of the "New" NFPA standard...along with about 10 other things that will co$t us a few thousand dollars when replacing equipment....Paul

I've been a firefighter long enough that I've heard exactly the same comments about...
1) SCBA
2) Aramid turnout gear fabric
3) Bunker pants
4) Fully enclosed apparatus cabs
5) The Incident Command System
6) Large diameter hose
7) Seat belts in apparatus
8) Flash hoods
9) Universal medical precautions
10) Chemical protective clothing for hazmat
11) Atmospheric monitoring for confined spaces
12) Life-safety rated rope and harnesses for vertical rescue
13) Shoring for trench rescue
14) PFDs for water rescue
15) Class A foam
16) etc, etc.
No judgement there brother, just a parallel.

You Dont need to run the yellow you can run all red. no white can be run in rear yellow took its place.
