Highway patrol verses Firefighter
This was just resent... A car fire broke out on a turnpike here in okla. and three departments were paged out to assist with the blaze. Now where this fire was at couldn't have been in a worse place at the worse time of day, and ya heavy traffic. It took quit some time for the dept's to respond and get there for the distance and man power and the time of day but they all got there, but this single OHP office decided he was mad because the fire dept's had traffic down to one lane for over an hour fighting this blaze that had a fual tank ruptured and metals burning and took it upon himself and I quote this, this has taken entirely to much time and I assure you this will not happen again and took down every single firefighters name and unit # for there report that was on scene...Now here is the catch I seen atleast six diffent OHP cars there on the side of the road with one unit a 1/4 mile back with no lights on to the rear with orange cones down to divert traffic to one lane, and what was being told at the scene is they had a POV come close to hitting them which in turn took there aggression out on the firefighters and even the tow truck driver on scene. My question is: when is enough a enough??? I mean we all need to work together and we all serve the same public and I've heard this on so many scenes and from other depts throughout the state: You give them a gun and they walk around with a chip on there shoulder and its there way or no way at all....But I will say this not all the OHP officers are like this, but you always have a select few or you have that one that has a bad attitude and gives you a bad taste in your mouth when having to work with these guys.

From a practical standpoint, maybe it's time for the head of the state's fire service and the head of the Oklahoma State Police to put their "heads" together and get this matter resolved before someone gets hurt.
I don't think that it's ironic or coincidence that this has happened in Oklahoma again.
I think that it's happened again because the matter has not been addressed.
If it happens again, the top cop should lose his job, because obviously, he's not capable of fixing it.
And so that I don't show bias; I'd say that the fire service should take the opportunity to make sure that they are being reasonable and professional.

I don't fight fire in Okie, but 3 depts (and I'm safely assuming 3 Pumpers) taking an hour for a car fire is a bit extensive. Surely one of those trucks had foam on it which would've taken them 1/3 of the time to put out. We've never used more than 500 gals to put a car fire out. There is a chance that fires burn differently in MS than OK though...

Nick you need to understand this was not only a class B Fire but also a class D fire, not to include a grass fire from the car fire. And the AFFF foam wouldnt hold a candle stick to the metals burning...

Chief, it sounds like there are some bad feelings from HP left over from the other incident that happen recently.Maybe someone should of took down his name, and have a heart to heart talk with his commander.

Well what the OHP officer had said was his supervisor was there and was pissed off to. So as a firefighter you just cant win...LOL

I think the OHP needs to look at the big picture and that is we have a job to do just like them. Its not our fault the car is on fire! Plus he was mad because the public likes firefighters and not cops LOL

Maybe its time the federal DOT start getting these different public safety groups talking and working together to understand someone will get killed if the traffic is not pushed away from fire and rescue equipment. If the cops don't understand all those dash cam shots of cops and police units getting bashed out on the highway somewhere is not a wakeup call for theirs and others safety.
I would stand out there with a shotgun just to make sure drivers understand to be watching where they are going.
If drivers are going to drive like their heads on fire and their ass is catching, talk and text on a cell phone while playing with the entertainment system on the dash while half asleep and eating a Big Mac then I would shoot at them.

RUT-ROH....OHP AGAIN...I'M GLAD WE HAVE AN EXCELLENT WORKING RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR SHP-(N.C.)--(EXCEPT YESTERDAY I HAD ONE TELL ME THAT I WAS HOLDING HIM UP FROM DOING HIS JOB--I HAD THE REGISTRATION AND DOING THE PAPERWORK FOR AN MVA-I POLITELY TOLD HIM THAT HE WAS HOLDING ME UP.....) ANYHOW IT IS A GREAT RELATIONSHIP.LET'S SEE..CAR FIRE..FUEL SPILL OVERHAUL,ENVIRONMENTAL...DREADED PAPERWORK...YA IT COULD TAKE SOME TIME. WENT TO A CAR FIRE NOT TOO LONG AGO...WE USED 2 ENGINES ( 1 WAS MUTUAL AID )ON THAT ONE--WE EVEN HAD THE HIGHWAY SHUT DOWN. AND SORRY NICK...BUT SOME OF US AREN'T BLESSED WITH FOAM ON OUR TRUCKS.OHP NEEDS TO DO SOME INTERNAL THINGS....EVENTUALLY THING COULD GET UGLY. WE HAVE KIND OF AN "UNWRITTEN" SOP--IF WE HAVE A TROOPER THAT GETS MAD ABOUT OUR OPERATIONS ON THE HIGHWAY--THEN HE CAN SIGN A PIECE OF PAPER STATING THAT HE TOOK COMMAND---THEN ITS ON HIM, AND THEN WE CAN GO HOME---THEY USUALLY BACK DOWN AFTER THAT. USUALLY THEY THANK US FOR THE VALUABLE SERVICE THAT US VOLLIES DO PROVIDE..

As I have stated in other posts, check your state laws. In Ohio we are in charge until we leave. No ifs ands or buts about it. We close the road if we need to, and they can whine all they want to. There have been similar cases, even including arresting firefighters. The police need to let us do our jobs safely and get over it.
