Hello to all,

I’ve been on the boards for about a month now and I am really impressed at the quality of this site. It is the best firefighter/rescue related site I have come across. Well done to the FFN WebTeam, admins and powers that be….

A little about me. I’m going to be 48 this year. Born and raised in New York City. In 1981 at the age of 19, I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. I come from a family of firefighters, so after I got out of the military I took the FDNY exam. I scored well, but I still needed a job until I was called. In 1987 I became a Deputy U.S. Marshal.

As it turned out, one person died and 30 people suffered acute renal failure taking the physical for the FDNY exam I took. They almost threw the test out. But they didn’t. Finally, in 1990, I was called for the FDNY.

I was assigned to lower Manhattan as a probie. I took promotional exams as soon as I was eligible. In 1999 I was promoted to Fire Marshal. 9/11 happened. I was assigned to the morgue for the duration. What an awful time. In May of 2002 I was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to a firehouse. Things get a little blurry after 2005, but I was retired in 2006. The wife works and I’m a stay at home dad now. I still have not come to terms with 9/11. I suppose I never will.  I see the numbers 911 and 343 everywhere. Digital clocks, bar codes, telephone numbers, helping my eight year old with her math, license plates, etc. I even saw it while waiting for the elevator in a two bank elevator lobby. The indicator for the left elevator read “9” and the one for the right read “11”.

I am religious and spiritual, but not a fanatic. However, I would like to pass this along….

On page 911 in the New Believers Bible (NLT) copyrighted 1996 (ISBN 0-8423-4567-1) is the following passage.. “the greatest love is shown when people lay down their lives for their friends”.

It certainly gave me pause to consider that this popular sentence that is representative of the dangers of firefighting and echoed at nearly every firefighters funeral, was written just five years before the terrorist attacks, on exactly page 911 of a 1,168 page Bible...

Regards to all,

Stay low and stay safe...

Joe, welcome to FFN. It's good to know that this is one of the better sites around, as it's the only forum-driven site for FF's I attend.

Hopefullly you will continue to move forward through your difficulties, but that is always much easier said than done. It seems you are looking to the right places for answers, and reading the right book, too.

Please feel free to share on the threads and become involved. I'm sure we will all benefit from your extensive knowledge and experience.

Again, welcome to the nation.
