We have 9 stations in our parish and only 15 vols. Out of those only about 7 are active in the operations and respond to scenes. I haqve talked to younger and older people and they just givre you the answer you want to hear and never show up.
I guess one thing that has not been asked is what type of area are you in. Is it a urban area near a city or rural where the town is a good distance?
A high school fire cadet program might be a help for being sure that you have some future for the service there. I have heard of a high school that had a station built by the students on the grounds to keep a pumper there for classes even run calls.
Is EMS a part of your operation or something separate?
I can't understand why anyone would not want to be part of this profession. It kills me that I can't participate any longer due to health, but want soooo much to be involved, and there are others who can't or won't comit. too sad!
If you can't ride you can always help recruit people that can or do admin work. Some depts need people to do paperwork or public relations, fire prevention work. Its still apart of the fire service.
You can even help teach CERTs to the public.
I just hope more fire companies would realize they need people to do things to free up them up to do what is needed
