I am a member of a very small rural fire department. I have been a member of this department for 3 years, and during that time we have had only one fundraiser. It was a fish fry and did not raise much money. My Chief has decided not to have one since, because he does not think we can have a successful one. He told me if I have a good idea, he would let me have a fundraiser and put me in charge of it. Does anyone have any ideas for fundraising in a rural department?

When you advertise, don't forget to address what your fund raising is for. Folks tend to give more willing if they know what the money is being used for. Then don't forget to put something in the local paper once you buy whatever equipment or tools with the raised money. tell the folks "Thank you".
Stay safe and good luck.
Our local fire department (Elkridge Vol. FC) gave away free family portraits to people who donated $50 to the fire station. While my family and I were getting our picture taken I asked how the fundraiser was going and they told me that it was one of their best.
Once your in there the photographer tries to sell you more than your free picture (of course), but with the station getting a percentage, most people would go ahead and add a frame or some wallet sized pictures just to help the station.
The pictures were very good and the process was not painfull like they can be sometimes. We were in and out in about 20 minutes.
The photgrapher was from Johnstown, Pa. but I think he travels all over.
Our protection area is very small ~ 600 people or so. We have a pancake breakfast during the summer sandcastle competition, send letters to local businesses and apply for government grants (via the Lottery branch). Service clubs are also often looking for good opportunities to show their community involvement. Don't limit your search to the clubs in the local area either as often the chapters in large centres will recognize and support small departments, especially if you remind them that some their residents/members are likely to travel through, vacation, hunt, fish etc. in your neighborhood. In short, do lots, it all counts!
Raffle wise. My brother lives in Shenandoah County VA and most of the depts and squads there have reverse raffles. They make a party out of it because anyone that buys a raffle ticket have to attend or send someone in their place. The way its done is that the dept or squad buy a grand prize item to be raffled off. It could be a large screen TV or a freezer full of beef. I have attended a couple of these events. The local merchants are asked to donate items for prizes that can be awarded to ticket holders during the drawing. The VFW has been used to have the drawing and to serve a meal and drinks to the attendees. All tickets are drawn and at times a prize is awarded through the event get to a certain number of tickets left
near the end. Anyone who has those tickets are called forward and sit facing the crowd. Now anyone in the crowd can bid to buy the tickets of holders and there has to be a agreement amoung the holders to sell for the bid or a holder can sell their ticket to a bidder. If there is no agreement to sell then holders will be eliminated by drawing the tickets and then prize awarded. Bids and sells can continue through out this part of the event until its down to the last two holders. There can be a bid for the last tickets or elimination of the runner up and the winner walk away with the grand prize.
Now other events can happen during this. Sell of small 50/50 tickets , tip jars, and Vegs strip tickets. The dept or squad make a good amount of money with these events.
On every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, our dept. has a breakfast buffet from 7-10a.m. it brings in a decent amount of money.

Here is an idea that we have been pretty successful with over the past year and still running...We do a $10 raffle ticket that we send out in the mail every other month. We do 500 tickets with 2 numbers on it. It goes off the evening lottery every night of the week. $25 every night but saturday and sunday we make them $100... Then if there are any holidays, or special days we might do $200, or $500...And whats nice is since it goes out to your mailing list you don't have to physically go out and sell them unless there are tickets that come back to you... Yes you send it out in an envelope with a stamped return envelope that way if the dont want it most of the time it will still come back...We make about $1500 a month on it and that money right now is going toward a new utility truck...Just an idea to help ya out... good luck with it...

In my Dept. we just started a new fund raiser we went to our shool and sold chances on a fire truck ride to school we gave the school a letter to send home with 8 tickets on it we're in a low income area so we keep the price low $1.00 for 1, 3 for $2 and 8 for $5  we sent it out the last of Sept. and well draw the ticket this Wed. at our fire prevention program so far we toke in a little over $500. with little work or man power. We also gave the school 25 ticket for kid that couldn't aford it.

There is a Dept. up near Buffalo that did this but thay charge $30 a tickets. We keep ours low for two reasons so all kids had a chance and it went with our fire prevention program.

One of my favorite fund raises is to sell firehouse cook books

just have all you members put in there favorite recipes you can

print on card stock paper use hole punch and string to

put book together it inexpensive and sell to you community

If you have a hall another one is a craft show around easter or christmas

rent tables for $10.00 ea

and do a santa run we get a lot of donations from doing that.

and small block party make good money.

if you need any info we do a lot of fund raising at my firehouse just let me know.
Whatever type of fundraiser you decide on, one great thing is to do some type of demonstration during it. people love to see what it is that we do. One idea is to get ahold of an old junk car and do an extrication scenario.
