Firefighters and MDA, FILL THE BOOT
We recently held our annual fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. We have an annual festival in town and our department sells food and drinks. Before the festival, there is a parade, where the firefighters walk through,some carry a boot for donations and others carry the banners. I am wondering what other departments do to help out the FILL THE BOOT program.

We have done the street corner FTB and first started doing that for off-duty personnel about 4 years ago with good results. This past year we did our first ON-Duty FTB with each shift and crew going out and had outstanding results. We may also do a FTB before a Packer game, but haven't done so recently, but may do so again in the future.
We also do a cookout for the campers at the local MDA summercamp and FF's go down and spend the day with the kids and so forth. It is a great time and gives a renewed drive to do FTB.

Jared, we do something similar. We have a festival on Memorial weekend that also has a parade. We have our equipment in the parade so we have firefighters walking along the side of the road with fire boots and collect donations from folks along the parade route. We average about 1800 per year during the parade.

I always kinda wondered that to. There has to be a reason why all these ff's so the MDA thing.

We dont really have any kind of festival or anything too elaborate. Generally we just send some guys out to the major intersections in town and have them collect money. We usually do pretty good

Many depts do also partner with a burn foundation, but as Clincher states, MDA started when firefighters helped raise money for a stricken child, however, I thought it may have been a FF's child. Either way, it started in the 50's and MDA became a partner with the IAFF to raise funds annually. It is still up to individual locals to participate or not, but for those that are partnered with MDA it has become a tradition.

To all of you who do it, Thank you sooo much. The MDA has helped us greatly with my daughter. We will actually be on the Jerry Lewis telethon on Labor Day with our daughter. My dept. does it too and I will be out there rain or shine. Thanks again to all of my brothers and sisters.
