I got to use this same line on a patient, a very large, whiny man, being placed into the back of the ambulance, he asked if I was an EMT.... and without missing a beat, that is exactly what I said to him, " no sir, but I stayed at a Holiday in Express last night" its the best,,, he didnt mutter another word the entire way to the hospital....
"Backdraft has the right-of-way"
"Firefighting - one of the few professions left that still makes house calls"
"Have cognition before ignition"
Authors unknown. Just some of my favorites
While on a run with a pt. with a good personality we had asked him a question. After one of our guys was wanting to ride the engine and get of the medic, he stated that he was tired of being "their family Doctor" to catch you up the one question that he asks is "have you contacted your family DR." ( only BULLSH@T runs that they have been sick for a long time) he was batting ZERO after 11 or 12 runs.....all B/S. So the pt. listed above I asked if he had ever called us before? he stated no Why? i told him we weren't accepting new pt.'s he laughed and in the fire service you that traveled fast. I thought that he was going to piss himself.
I always tell the cadets, "One tool is good but two tools are better!" Also, when they get assigned to my Truck, I say, "If you came here to put out fires, the Engine is over there because on this Truck, we grab tools!" I also heard an old timer tell me, "Just because the fire went out, don't mean you did a good job."
The fire service is a lot like the inventory of a lighting store...
You have your floodlights, that shine over a wide area.
You also have your spotlights that shine brightly in one area.
You have your chandeliers that look pretty but break easily.
You have the rough service bulbs that take a beating and still get the job done.
Last but not least... you have your 4 watt night lights that can barely can find their own way, let alone where the fire is!
This quote is from a D.C. firefighter in the "Into The Fire" documentary that was on the History channel--"Breaking Glass and kicking ass" love that quote....Chris
