I got curious today and was wondering if anyone had done this? A while back a friend of mine got a turquoise/teal flash hood. It was to support a firefighter that had a son, with some type of disease, (not trying to disrespect but I don't remember). I tried to get the link from him but was slack. Anyways the moral of the story is that I liked the blue. Have any of ya'll actually dyed a flash hood the color or design you wanted? I'm seriously thinking about it.

Do a google search for colored firefighting hoods.  In a matter of a couple minutes I found several companies that sell multiple colors of hoods.  I would go that route before I would consider dying a hood.

I'd try emailing Du Pont and ask if it's safe to do it (I'm assuming your hood is Nomex).  There is a slight possibility that it could affect the properties of the hood adversly.

Without the OK from the manufacturers you could be in trouble if it lets you down, no one will accept liability for something you have altered unless you had approval to do it.

My advice is don't mess with your kit, if you want a blue flash hood go online and see if you can source one.  I've seen them on eBay (search on Nomex Hoods) for under $40.

I've searched and searched and cannot find one I would want. I've researched and found nothing on RIT dye affecting Nomex. It doesn't say anything about it. I'll be emailing RIT to see but was wondering if anyone had done it.

It ain't a fashion statement, Matt. Just show up and do the job.

You are correct in that it may not be a fashion statement; but why not have something fun to occupy your time with your co-workers. We all like to be unique in our own special ways.

How old are you Matt?  Because honestly, many have told you not to do this and yet you are insistent upon reseaching and doing it anyways.

Here is a site that has multiple shades of blue firefighting hoods.

Oh, you want to be "unique". Well, then by all means buy the blue hood you like. I'm sure it'll be the only one they have.

I believe that tampering with any PPE would be against NFPA and OSHA. If your hood were to fail, and kill you, your dept would get in alot of trouble for allowing you to do so. If you ask me, that would be a dumb choice.

Here are a couple more choices:

I'm sorry to sound so rude but did you get hit in the head or did you just not listen to what some of these guys have said.  NFPA and OSHA are serious people and if you die your department is going to go through an investigation all because you wanted to be unique.  Come on what are you 5 pull your head out of your ass and don't tamper with your gear.  There is a reason of why you can buy all these neat other colors instead of doing it yourself.  Why you ask is probably some other dumb ass did and either got hurt or killed because they altered there gear.  So suggestion go to these web sites these nice people posted and don't do it yourself.

I can understand modifying a tool to make it more versatile on the fire ground, or to help me do a better job at being safe.

But, this will help me how?

Ok everyone, I did some research, even with your facetious comments, and have come up with hard facts of why this will not work and why isn't a good idea. I appreciate all of ya'lls input even though some were a bit harsh. It was just an idea that I maybe wanted to try. I will not be doing this. Now to the facts. I figured it would void NFPA and the warranty, and I figured it wouldn't work/ be frowned upon, but I wanted to make sure, not just for myself but to hopefully bring some incite to other fire service personnel if this ever came up again.

I emailed RIT dye company and Majestic Fire Apparel. RIT says the Nomex will not accept the dye due to the moister repellent.

Majestic Fire Apparel says that it will ruin the integrity and void NFPA and the warranty (I figured it would).

Now another thing that Majestic said is that any stitching or embroidery (I was not planning on doing this, but for your information) will also compromise the hood and NFPA and the warranty.

I am 23, if you were wondering, and get very curious about some thing. Sorry to get some riled up, but it's only someone doing research. At least I did that and not just do it.

Thanks

See now you've done a service here by providing information (research) that warns against modifying in any way your flash hood.  Now don't you just wish you'd done that before you posted?
