I have seen different types of extinguishing devices that are coming into use around the world or here in the US.

This device is used in many countries in different applicantions from a backpack unit to mounted to a helicopter. Using the backpack unit a firefighter can put out a car fire by themself.
Then you have ARA Safety which created a sort of firefighting grenade that uses a chemical spray to put out a fire when its thrown into it.

I just wonder if anyone has looked into these devices?

The one thing about these devices is that they use less water or no water to knock down a fire. Would anyone try one of these devices if they were offered to try it out.
I watched all the videos for the cannon and the one for the grenade. They both look really effective on the videos. The grenade, I would imagine, wouldn't be the most cost effective thing if it's one time use and very expensive, as I would imagine you could achieve a similar result with good nozzle work, although it's still pretty neat. The water cannon, on the other hand, seems to spread the water apart into smaller droplets and a fog nozzle could achieve, thereby creating even more heat absorption, which would lower flashover potentials if used in a room. Also, it would seem to be a very big advantage for wildland or tanker operations for departments that don't have any or very little hydrant coverage.
Grenade might make a last resort or help is a long ways off type item. Something a chief might keep in their a vehicle for a quick knock down before a engine gets on the scene or a crew without a line in a confinded area.
ashfire, I would try it if it were offered, found it quite interesting watching the video! Wouldn't rely on it for a heavy fire situation. It might be good for a small fire in the back of a tractor trailer as well? Found this interesting, Thanks!
hey.smart ideas.
Just my opinion here. The cannon looks like a good idea. However, in oirder to fight or extinguish a fire such as a vehicle fire, you will need tyo attach a seperate air tank for breathing. (weight issue). Might not be a problem for some, but we still use the old steel tanks, and combine that with a tank of water? not for me. Great idea though.
The grenade?... lets see....looks expensive, one time use. I think this would be better used for the home owner themselves. Only way out is blocked by fire? Chuck this device in and maybe, by cooling the area down or even extinguishing the fire, they can have a way out. This could also reduce the damage done while waiting for the fire crew to arrive. My opinion, sell this to the home owners.
All in all, Great ideas. Someone's thinking. Myself?..I'll stay with the ol' hose -n- water.
Good point about the air packs plus water packs. However, some of the videos it looked like the cannon was attached to a hand line. I wonder if it could be used just like a combination nozzle on a preconnect. If so, could you even use this in a structure fire?
