Recently our county combination fire service career fire chief asked a member of the volunteer side to be a deputy chief of the county fire service with pay, a county vehicle and uniform. The gentleman has been a volunteer for years since he was a junior firefighter and has been a officer in two volunteer depts, went up through the ranks of the volunteer fire and rescue association to be president and then the ranks of the state fire and rescue association to be president and then the county fire commission where the chief then ask him to serve the county as deputy chief as a direct connection to the chief for the volunteers.
The gentleman has gone out of his way to help the volunteer depts with problems like getting items from the county warehouse that have been requested in the past few months to problems within the stations.
Are there other counties or depts that have tried a similar idea to make their system operate better as a combination system?
Our chaplin corps has visited and done services for both career and volunteer personnel and the ladies aux has responded with the canteen unit to help with rehab at major fires.

Since the new deputy chief has been established, the current situation within the operations of the volunteers has been in a state of disarray, he has been working with both sides to try to bring back a working unity between the career and volunteers.
Talks with the career fire chief and his staff, career union and the county exec and council have been on going.
Many problems araised during the last county exec and a career fire chief and staff a few years back.
Distrust was happening and tyrant like actions to the volunteers. The career chief retired and another took his place but he was replaced by the current chief on the day the current county exec was sworn into office.
Before this the former county exec and his wife, a newly elected county council person, and many other county personnel and business people had come under federal investigations of misuse of funds from different soruces and criminal actions involving county personnel. Many are now serving prison terms and are still due for court hearing, trial and sentencing.
