I have one tattoo that you can see in a short sleeve uniform shirt. So on the ambulance I cover it up. The question I have is why on a fire scene I can't take off my turn-out coat if I don't have a long sleeve shirt on. When its 100 degrese out thats crazy, not to mention unsafe.
Me personaly, I agree with the person on here that said, "If they don't like my tattoo, they can save themselfs"

Reading your post, it take it that your FD has a tattoo policy.You didn't mention what your tattoo looks like. Does any tattoo violate your FD policy or just your type? Did you have the tattoo before you joined or before the policy was placed? With that info, an opinion can be established. A tattoo does not keep anyone from displaying their mental or physical skills it's just gives a first impression to the public. Sounds like a PR issue.

My F.D. recently drew up a policy on tattoos. The policy prohibits tattoos that are visible when in uniform if they are offensive in nature. We've got FF's with tattoos, but none were affected by this policy, besides it applys to new hires. I personally do not yet have any tattoos, yet.

Sounds to me like your F.D. needs to revamp it's tattoo policy, unless yours is offensive in some way.

I agree with the idea of being smart when getting one - unfortunately at the right age you can't tell anyone that they're about to make a mistake. Live and learn. =)

I recently heard that the Marine Corp will no longer allow marines with large arm tattoos to serve as embassy guards overseas and they will not be able to serve as recruiter's here in the states. I guess they want to project a positive image of themselves to the public. As for myself, as long as they are tasteful and do not disrespect anyone or anything they are o.k.

The Marine Corps takes a conservative approach to personal appearance. Uniform regulations stress that personal appearance is to be conservative and commensurate with the high standards traditionally associated with the Marine Corps. No eccentricities in dress or appearance are permitted because they detract from uniformity and team identity.
Marines are prohibited from:
a. Tattoos or brands on the head and neck.
b. Sleeve Tatoos. A sleeve tattoo is a very large tattoo, or a collection of smaller tattoos, that covers or almost covers a person's entire arm or leg.
c. Half-sleeve or quarter sleeve tattoos that are visible to the eye when wearing standard PT Gear (T-shirt and shorts). A half-sleeve or quarter-sleeve tattoo is defined as a very large tattoo or collection of smaller tattoos that covers, or almost covers the entire portion of an army or leg above or below the elbow or knee.
d. Tattoos or brands that are prejudicial to good order, discipline and morale, or are of a nature to bring discredit upon the Marine Corps. These may include, but are not limited to, any tattoo that is sexist, racist, vulgar, anti-american, anti-social, gang related, or extremest group or organization related.
Marines who currently have a sleeve tattoo(s) prior to 1 April 2007, will be grandfathered. The Marine's command will insert a photograph(s) of the respective (tattoo(s) along with a measurement(s) of the size in inches and of the location(s) on the body and the date the tattoo(s) was documented, on the Page 11 of the Marine's SRB. The Marine will sign the Page 11 entry verifying the information is correct.

I suppose I should reply given my name and the nature of the post LOL... I have many tattoo's, and a few visible in my Duty Uniform when wearing short sleeves... I am mixed and bias of course because I have them. Yes, I can see why someone can deem them unprofessional, yet I can see how it doesn't matter. Between my Department and Tacoma Fire Department and Lakewood Fire Dept there are many of us with tattoo's visible in uniform.
People look at us as firefighters to be professional and to help them, and sometimes a Firefighter with tattoos can intimidate the elderly, while our current generation expects it. As firefighters, we get profiled due to the nature of our job as guys and girls, who are willing to put their lives on the line and when you see a firefighter with tattoos, now a days its expected... Now if you see a Doctor with tattoo's, you start to worry. I think unlike Doctors, teachers, and so on... our job is professional but tattoos are more acceptable... i know alot of it may be biased, and i've only been a Firefighter for 5 years but from what i've seen, it seems to be more acceptable now a days than it did.... Then again, firefighters always had that "bad ass" image in the public eye who swore, smoked ciggs, drank alcohol on duty and ran into burning buildings when everybody ran out.... to this day, some dept's are getting away from that image as no tobacco rules (mainly for insurance purposes) etc.... the fire depts are cleaning up, yet.... tattoos are becoming more accepted.... Some depts who have a ban on tattoos, or will not hire those with visible tattoos i think are going to miss out on some excellent firefighters, but in the same sense i can see how they are trying to change their image that the public has of them.
Don't get me wrong, I feel the tattoos should at least be tasteful, non gang related, racist etc... I have tattoos, a few FF tattoos, a few surfing tattoos and a few military tattoos, etc... all reflect a part of my life... my FF tattoo's are visible in a short sleeve shirt. Anyways im rambling now and i have nothing important to say, just sharing "MY" opinion on the fact, and due to my name i figured I should put my 2 cents in.... But like i said, I see where both sides are coming from on this topic...

Sorry, My tattoo is on my forarm and it is of my daughters name. I got my tattoo before I joined my department but in the interview process they never asked about it. ( I interviewed in the winter in Minnesota so I had on long sleeves)
The other tattoo I have is on my upper arm and it is a cross the says "remember 343)

I am in agreement with non-gang related, racist, sexist etc but for others, what's the big deal? Would a dept. not hire someone because they had a scar on their face? birthmark? I would hope the dept. has a big contingency fund because they'll probably have to use it to pay off the lawsuits.

I have 1 and it is not seen onless my shirt is off or sleeveless.It is dedicated the the fire service.I am a professional and in the public eye at my regular job.I have to keep it covered for that.I don''t have a problem with tatts however I have seen some that are taste less in these times.If you are going to get them, be conciderate of others.It is not much differant than those that wear nasty t-shirts or filthy cloths when responding.Think about it , you wake up to someone doing cpr on you with rings coming out of them everywhere and tatts of unknown things.I would quit breathing again.Just a thought.Again, free speech . Do what you want, just think of others.And most important, Be safe.
