I am talking about a helmet. Would you spend your own money for a helmet if you didn't like the one issued to you by the department? Would it be leather or plastic? New York style or Metro? Rachet, adjustable suspension?
How much is your noggin worth?
I love this type of thread - always read them! Why? Amusement factor I think. The helmet thing is so North American! And I'm not having a go at you, we're all different.
We're issued all of our PPE, and that's what you wear, the issued PPE. You've bought your own? Good for you, leave it at home. Issued helmets? Kevlar reinforced fibreglass. Issue boots? Very comfortable leather. The boots arent't terribly long-lasting, but that doesn't matter because they just get replaced when needed.

Yes I have done it many times in helmets and tools and rope etc in my thirty year career and I plan on to keep going strong for a long time as long as the Good Lord allows me. I would suggest to by the Cairns Leather New Yorker 5A with a skull guard saver and it being adjustable it is the best in the service of course with Burkies on it. I hope I have been some help. Everyone has their opioions but thats mine.. Hugh Fawcett 57 House Irwin PA P.S. I would not consider the plastic I knew a Battalion Chief that wore one and the helmet cracked and than My own past chief got upset at me and my captain when we decided to buy the Leather New Yorkers 5A when the dept was issuing the Philadephian which was a Rescue helmet and not a Entry helmet so my chief lost that conversation and me and my captain purchased the NewYorker 5A Leather. So us firefighters started our own trend even though all of us guys felt that our heads were worth the money at the time it was 350.00 and now it is I believe 425.00-450.00 a helmet.God Bless You Always. Remember even the chief can be wrong but so can we but this time we were right!!! Read up always and whoever is in charge of purchasing your equipment take the time to Read Up on what is the very best for the job you are doing!!! Brothers&Sisters look out for one another by reading sometimes two heads are better than one......Good Luck....

Jeanine, The Fire Service is not a Fashion Show by no means but its a matter of what is the safest for you so you have to ask yourself what is your head worth?? What are your feet worth?? Buy leather boots I find better traction and my feet stay warmer so it all depends on if you are a firefighter that goes inside the structure to battle the blaze or if you stay outside or if You are a Rescue Tech or if you are a Engineer for your safety on what you purchase and how much you spend... Everyones thoughts are different thats why you must read up for your own safety also.Hugh Fawcett 57 House Irwin,PA
If you are looking for a low profile helmet and you do not have a big melon, look at the Cairns 880. It can actually take a 5" front instead of the standard 6" front that all other traditional helmets take.
No to mention that they are viloating federal law that says that they have to provide you minimum gear that is compliant. Bunkers, helmets, gloves, boots and hoods.
Chief, if you want to outfit the rest, let me know. I would be happy to help you out and get them for a lot less. You could even get the 1044, same specs, different material, for less money in order to get the rest.

Yup, thousands on stuff from my own back pocket. Some of the items were leather helmet(s) yes multiple, leather boots, pro-tech 8 gloves that actually fit, extra set of gear, rescue harness, PSS, pocket tools, flashlights, and on..... deserve the best.
I agree that the money would be better spent on a good pair of boots and glove's ( of which I like kangaroo gloves). A helmet is important but the issued one has to be nfpa approved and safe. But then again I guess it would depend on your personal needs.
You know Art, as much as I would personnally love to have one of those cool looking leather helmets, it will never happen. Only issued equipment is covered by the departments SOG's and insurance. Wearing something that was not provided is a no no in my world. But... I do love those leather helmets...
I have been issused 3 helmets in my current dept. 1 when I got on, 1 when we got new gear, and my current came with my promoation, no not a white one, they can keep that. All more than adaquit to protect my pumpkin. To be issused anything less would be a violation of law. As for style I believe everyone should have the same. Now with that said, I personally like the euro style with the slide up sheild, but would guess I'm in the minority here, and no I won't spend my own money, but might whine to the trustees for one.
First of all no way don't get paid enough to buy my own equipment... we just bought new equipment for everyone.. But if I could buy my own.. It would be alittle lady friendly...
